I've permanently damaged my hearing.

I was laying in bed last night listening to the incessant ringing in my head.

All those years as a wannabe dj and loud clubs and warehouses, concerts and parties, they've hurt mah lil ole ears. Fuckers.

It dawned on me that I've permanently damaged my hearing. I've kindof grown accustomed to it, and I don't notice it if I'm busy or there's a bit of background noise.

But when its quiet around me, I can hear a sustained ringing. That sucks...

When I'm old...I'll have to have a friggin hearing aid...and I'll say, "Wassat?" alot.

Anyone in the same boat? Anyone know of a remedy or a way to salvage somewhat a broke ear?

ALTHOUGH... if we become Raelians... they claim to be doing some advanced stem cell research now.

It's been hypothesized that the little damaged hairs in the inner ear can be repaired or replaced with stem cell technology.

For me I think it was brought on by a 1-2 combo ....

first I was coming back down the hill from Reno during allergy season.. I was congested real bad & all of a sudden it felt like someone had needle nose pliers to various parts inside my ear... aiieee that shit fugging HURT.

Then a couple weeks later I was messing around skateboarding downtown and smacked my head.. same ear.

The rest is historeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Yeah man, I'm just like you, I have the same kind of ringing in my ears. I just learned to live with it and haven't been listening to anything loud to save them from getting worse.

As far as getting better, I'm not sure as to what can be done besides hearing aids. I haven't heard of the other research that's been going on.

I guess that on the positive side, hearing aids are getting smaller and smaller nowadays, ha ha ha.

The funny thing about stem cell research & all the moral issues trying to slow it down -- I guess you can get and grow perfectly good amounts of stem cells from 'baby teeth'.

Who would have thought the tooth fairy holds the key to immortality.

That bitch has been ripping off our kids for far too long.... a dollar for a few million stem cells. Woo.. what a deal.

I hear alot better in my right ear. I only notice this on the phone. Who knows if it's a big problem. It could be from playing in a band w/o any ear plugs.

I'll check those links in a sec...

But a couple things about Tinnitus....

As with any 'uncureable' disease, there are a TON of snake oil salesmen. Caveat Emptor.

Well Tinnitus is actually considered more of a sympton than a disease.. It's got various causes and it CAN be treatable, doesn't mean it always is. There are all kinds of clinics and specialists all over the country who can diagnose the underlying issues and help treat tinnitis

I guess I shouldn't say it isn't cureable exactly...

If there wasn't DAMAGE to the ear that you know about (ie loud noise, head injury etc)... then you should definitely look into other causes. You should get it looked at by a doctor anyway, no matter what you think the cause is.

I had to have a brain scan to rule out an acoustic neuroma (tumor), and they did confirm hearing loss in that ear in the 4000hz range or something... which they said is indicitive of 'nerve damage, usually cause by head injury or exposure to loud noise'. They gave me a pat on the back and a "Sorry Pal."

Anyway... if its not cause by damage or noise exposure that you know of, you could be taking a medicine that is causing it, or have an infection, blood pressure problems or any number of other problems.

And if you were to correct those underlying problems, then the tinnitus could go away.

But in the case of people where those hairs in the inner ear have been damaged.... we're fucked life....at least until the tooth fairy starts sharing her booty with stem cell researchers anyway.

Btw... if anyone wants some temporary relief:

http://www.nch.com.au/tonegen/

You can grab that tone generator and flip it to "white noise"

I am with ya man. Way too many years in front of the old Mesa Boogie and later Hartke bass cabs here.

The best advice I can give you is see a doctor and avoid the loud noises. Otherwise you will find yourself finding some mid tones unbearable and the ringing just gets louder and louder.

Bad News.

Seemed cooler to play without earplugs. Now I don't leave home without them.

I use to get pissed of at the assholes that cranked the music so load that it wasn't ever worth listening to cause it was so distorted.
Well I'm sure you were told but didn't listen(bit of an oxy-moron)!

Too many years standing right in front of my stacks when I was playing and too many loud concerts, all without proper hearing protection...I have that same constant rining in my ers...my tinitus is so bad, I can only talk on the phone with my right ear as I can't hear over the phone clearly with my left...

....and nothing worse than laying in bed at night and a loud ringing in the ears keeping me awake...

Pick up a Noise Machine from HoMEDICS for 12.95. It has waterfall, white noise, heart beat, ocean, rainforest and few other sounds and you won't notice the ringing at all when you're in bed.

No, but I do know people who'd had it lessened or cured with continued treatment, dependant on the cause, of course.

Forgive me if this was posted, but there is some promising noise therapy that can help you with tinnitus. Do a search for Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. They have noise generators that can produce the necessary sounds to help you with your specfic case of tinnitus.

A side note, I've had a big improvement in my tinnitus in the past 3 years because my cpap machine generates some background noise at night during sleep.
