Putting Words in Your Mouth

Have you ever done a search on your name and found an article about yourself? I was doing a search today and to my surprise my former University did an article about my company and how I got funded by them. What I'm curious about is the fact they quoted me on certain facts which I never made, in fact I was never interviewed for this article which is rather frustrating since they're basing my company based on the last time I talked to them which was over 2 years ago. Still a good article though....

Way to go, WG.....although that is kinda strange

You're probably one of the few who actually successfully continued in his own business -- little do they know....heheheh

I always get a huge kick out of how you managed that one....

Very nice article about you even if they made up quotations that you didn't say. If it was a US university I think you could sue ;)

It is nice to know your university tracked your success though...the only thing my uni calls me about is wanting donations to the alumni fund LoL

LOL, actually the reason they used me was because I was the only profitable venture they funded and they're trying to raise additional capital for grants. Not a bad article but a 5 minute phone call to get facts that is more recent would have been appreciated. Or a heads up that an article was done about me.

Yeah, Jim's knowledge blew my mind. I met him for 3-4 hours per month and the insights he provided was really invaluable. One of the best learning experiences in the world, it's rare to meet a billionaire and let alone to feel so little before his presence. He definitely tought me a few things about business

http://www.findarticles.com/cf_dls/m...le.jhtml?term=

That's what ytcracker, a Hacker News Network writer we contacted through e-mail, said he was doing when he left his digital signature on the Web site of his home town, Colorado Springs. The 17-year-old, who agreed to speak anonymously, said he was arrested in May in connection with his virtual graffiti on that site, as well as for his break-ins at, among other sites, the National Aerospace and Aeronautics guided flight Web site. He is expected to be ordered to pay back more than $30,000 in damages. Details of his cracking have been covered in the press, although the courts don't release the names of juveniles in such cases.

But ytcracker said the Whole thing is "kind of funny" because he swears he is just a "grey-hat hacker"--he uses cracker techniques, such as breaking into networks and defacing Web pages, but just to point out to universities, companies, and government agencies that their systems were weak.

"I back everything up that I change, so no one loses anything, and then I let the system administrators know that their systems are weak," ytcracker said. "If the holes are closeable, I tell them how to do it."

He said he once gained access to a major retailer's entire database of credit cards from Canadian customers, so he tried to notify their system administrators of the hole.

"It's not like they are going to listen to some 17-year-old calling them up," he said. "That's why sometimes I have to mess with their Web sites, so they listen and realize they have a problem."

Ytcracker said he, like other net infiltrators, cut his teeth on university systems because they were the easiest to get into.

"You are talking about dealing with a system administrator who is probably a college student and knows less about computers than I do," ytcracker said.

"Between the two of us, it's more like a game than anything else. Universities don't have a security mindset and they never come after hackers. But it's not like anyone is stealing anything--universities don't have a lot of valuable information that anyone else would want."

Unless they are stupid enough to leave open attachments to other networks. Ytcracker said he was able to break into some government Web sites because they were maintained by a professor who worked on the sites through his university's network.

Ytcracker said he dropped out of high school because hacking and cracking was taking up too much of his time. When he was 15, he founded a marketing company that sent out spam--unrelenting torrents of junk e-mail offering promotions and sales. He made so much money he got out of the spam racket, he said, and now he just invests his money in the stock market.

"But now I am hoping to get a job as a security consultant, and I already have some gigs that are coming through," he said. "The Japanese government asked me to find the holes in their Web site. I didn't charge them though. People should learn that it's better for me to hit them than someone else. I don't have any ulterior motives and I am not into bringing down the government or anything like that. There are much scarier hackers out there than me."

some of this is bullshit

http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,32729,00.html

The Web pages of three US Government agencies, including NASA's Goddard Flight Center, have been defaced by a cracker who is worried that US government security systems are vulnerable to cyberattack.

The front pages of the sites for NASA's Goddard Flight Center international page, the Bureau of Land Management's National Training Center, and the Defense Contracts Audit Agency, on Wednesday were replaced with a page showing a cartoon of a hooded hacker wearing a peace symbol necklace and a message warning of Web site security holes.

"To the US government and military -- I have warned you about these security flaws," wrote ytcracker on the Flight Center's front page. "Please secure our military systems to protect us from cyber attack.

?Ytcracker,? who broke into FAA systems three times in 1999, agrees the agency has serious problems. The 17-year-old from Colorado was convicted of computer crime and criminal mischief in May for more than 40 electronic break-ins. He hasn?t yet been sentenced.
?The vulnerabilites that we discovered were months old and should have been patched immediately,? he wrote in an e-mail to ABCNEWS.com.
Ytcracker said he?d broken into an FAA e-mail server last year, but that didn?t think anyone had successfully accessed an ATC computer for malicious purposes. Ytcracker himself would just alter Web site front pages to reflect his presence and leave.

In recent weeks, a notorious hacker known as YTcracker has penetrated several government and military Web sites, including those belonging to the Bureau of Land Management's National Training Center, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the DCAA. YTcracker, a 17-year-old from Colorado Springs, Colo., said he routinely sends messages to government Web site administrators insisting that they address vulnerabilities and adopt Unix or other more secure systems, but the messages largely go ignored. During his recent round of Web site defacements, YTcracker said he "targeted the systems the government would look at and take seriously."

"I understand the government might not have the manpower or the funds to conduct full security audits of their systems," said YTcracker, who said he hopes someday to work for the government.

Orchestrated by a 17-year-old benevolent hacker, "YTCracker" has a court date looming in his near future for defacing the City of Colorado Springs Web site in December 1999 when he publicized its security flaws.

YTCracker, who wrote the Observers.net bulletin, said AOL's latest network compromise is a huge security lapse that the company could quickly remedy.

"This is really big because the guy gained access to development libraries and access to a lot of things," he said. "AOL's thinking that their firewall is impenetrable. Network operations and security needs to look at it a little more objectively to see how they can manage internal security and not just worry about external issues."

YTCracker added that companies and institutions can take action to stop the security breaches in their tracks, but few seem to take security seriously.

"This idea is not only restricted to AOL, but to any corporate Intranet or government network," he said. "Their systems are also at risk through a similar programs, using like methodology.

"Intrusion detection systems are able to pick this up to stop complete access behind a firewall. If a company is set up right, it's not a problem," he added. "I think AOL has gotten cocky about their security."

Yup, this story was actually 2 semesters old and written by a coop student. So its no wonder facts got distorted from term to term. The article portrayed my company in a positive light but I don't like them claiming my clients are banks and casinos. And add to that the quotations they used without my consent. Either way, nothing that puts me in a negative light so I'm happy with it.
