Does anyone know what a BBS is(was)?
I started in the Adult business in the days of Bulletin Boards and huge downloadable .gif files.
I posted in the news groups when it was still "new" and the word spam was not a household name. I thought 2400 baud modems were fast. I bought not one but two 10 meg mfm hard drives cause i never wanted to run out of space. I still change my chat windows to a black background with green lettering cause its what I'm used too. Can anyone here relate to this? |

that's pretty old school
i started on a 14.4bps modem, 133 meg hard drive, 8 megs of ram going into proggy rooms on aol 1.7 and then 2.5, and then schooling it up in 'vbhelp' ... but that's not nearly as oldschool as black BG with green text BBS |

Tradewars, baby!
To show my geek-a-tude, a couple years ago I wrote a web site that emulated the old RA BBS - same admin style, same annoying registration questionairre, everything. We put Tradewars on it and made it telnet accessible - was a ton of fun for about two months. Then it got boring again :-) I actually miss the old BBS days. BBS' were something really new and fresh. Plus, they had one thing the web generally lacks - a real sense of community. Boards like this are great, but most BBS' were local in scope.. some had parties twice a month. I met a lot of cool people (and some not so cool) in those days. |

We still have a large group here. The real old school people. Most of them are still doing the same thing only differently. CU-SeeMe replaced the ascii text chat and video rooms became our home. I Put up a site for the reflectors as they are now called but it was taken down by the new owners after I sold it to him and his wife.
I've always done inhouse server location. from multi-point serial cards with modem racks for dial-in connections. to T-1's and routers right in the server room. been considering some free hosting and out sourcing bandwith, but last time i tried it i got burned. is hosting your own websites on your own servers a bad idea? |

I used to call BBSs when I was a kid. We had a 300 baud modem on a Commodore 64. That was fun! I had alot of fun on BBSs in the mid-to-late 90's. The first time I ever got on the internet was through the internet gateway of my favorite BBS in Atlanta, INDEX (Information, News and Data EXchange). That was in late 1995. I also used to call Dokk's BBS, Software Monster, and my dad (who met him on the BBS) actually went to Dokk's house a couple of times way back then! Those were some fun times.
![]() I LOVED Tradewars, Falcon's Eye, Barren Realms Elite, and especially L.O.R.D. Legend of the Red Dragon ROCKED! Jennie Garth is cute! Hehe. |

I got my first computer in 1997 ( a P133mhz, 2 gig HD, 32 megs of RAM, 33.6 modem) just as BBSes were fading out. I spent about a year on them. Trade Wars and LORD were good, but I completely forgot about BRE. Holy fuck, I loved that game.
Is there somewhere that it can be played online?

I started on a C64, 1541 & 1200 baud modem. Then when I became elite (haha) I was smokin' with a 9600 baud modem. ANSI, PC Pursuit amongst others, PBX's, 0 day warez. I forgot the name of the BBS software I had but I ran the Error Channel BBS ( 0-1 Day Warez)

I should re-install wildcat bbs on a server and try to get it to work. it was geared toward the possibility of the internet actually taking off. and has a little tcp/ip technology. Anyone tried that?
Wait i forgot most of you are 20-25 years old. Think they are old enough to handle BBS chat? |

Was Tradewars the one where your board sent off to fight against another boards space army and then after a few days the results would come in saying that you destroyed this and that and captured X amount of planets?

Took a few minutes to find this:
http://www.eisonline.com/products/ That's the homepage for Tradewars 2002, and TWGS - the Tradewars Game Server. TWGS Rocks.. lets you host Tradewars over TCP/IP without a BBS, etc. |

My C64 didn't have a modem.
![]() I used to get online at my uncle's house back when you paid by the minute. When I bought my first computer (at 18) it was a P100 with a 14.4 modem, 16 megs ram, and a 1.2 gig hard drive. |

Ya I remember BBS'
I had just spent $3K on a computer and was annoyed that it was idle most of the time. ![]() It started off on a 4 mb 386dx33 with a 9600 baud modem. I upgraded it with an extra 4 mb of ram for 400$. I just finished buying a laptop for 1300$ and upgrading to a gig of ram for 300$. Simply incredible how fast computers have dropped in price and increased in performance. Someone was saying that they were logging into BBS's in 97? Strange, in our market BBS's were devastated in 94-95. Once the Internet hit all the trade shows all the Sysops folded up shop and started ISP's. ;) or got out of the game. Hey if anyone is interested in playing tradewars again there are a few web equivalents around. Take a look at these: http://www.quantum-star.com/ http://aatrade.springfield.net/ I have something rediculas like 50 quadrillion credits in the springfield game. If anyone wants some cash join the game and let me know. Cheers. |

I totally remember the thrill of dialing into a BBS as a youngster. I totally hear that. I also miss the days of IRC when you could do it in raw ass IRCII. I also loved scripts like Chaos, Phoenix, Scythe, and Sculd.
