Windows 2003 Server IIS 6.0 ASP Pages Slow to load - any ideas

Hi,

FIRSTLY - before everyone says "why run windows server" the answer is cause we "inherited" the engine of our site and have not had the time to do a PHP / MY SQL version.. yet.

I'd like to know if anyone has experienced this problem. We recently migrated from W2K server to 2003 server. At the same time our boxes were upgraded from p4 2.4ghz 1GB ram IDE to Dual Xeon 2.4ghz 2GB ram SCSI. So you would expect our site's performance to increase significantly. Wrong. Now it just breaks or slows to an absolute crawl VERY often when serving simple ASP pages. The DB is Sql and runs on another box so its not a DB/SQL problem.

I have read of a few others describing similar problems on IIS newsgroups. It appears that IIS 6 has some form of instability when serving boring old ASP pages.

Has anyone on this board experienced a performance loss when going to 2003 / IIS 6

There is nothing wrong with running Windows 2003. It's solid as a rock.

There should be no performance decrease...in fact, we have always seen an increase with every Windows 2000 - 2003 transition we make.

I administer some windows 2003 servers and there are no reasons why it should be slow unless someone messed with some of the settings.

ICQ me: 235719545 if you want some help

Sure thing... I need not say ANYTHING about you. The .NET Guru crap under your handle says it all. Have fun pointing and clicking ;).

EDIT: I am curious though, how what I've said proves I am ignorant.

Hey EricP I see you are into .Net I have been coding in .net since first beta hit me up if you wanna talk and exchange some ideas.

As for people that say windows is shit .. I guess you just can't afford the license for windows plus the $10k license for MS sql so you have to go with the free stuff and proove to yourself it's better.

I hear that sentence a lot here when it comes to hosting : " you get what you pay for" so how come it doesn't apply here.

Well if you make business moves based on anecdotes your mom fed you from childhood then, well, i really have nothing to say to that either! Now if you look at network throughput, stability, functionality, and an auditable source tree (thus security), and still want to go with windows... have fun! Although really don't feel a need to justify myself you clowns. Stick to porn, and leave the technical details to those who know what they're doing. Lastly, If you honestly beleive that wasting $10,000 on monolithic software makes you a better man, go buy a ferrari. (no offense steve lightspeed). Have fun with C# and OOP fag... I'm still writing object oriented code with macros in ANSI-C.

Or perhaps I know it's destructive power to data integrity. If you truly feel like burning money on a corperate OS, go buy a few sunblades and Solaris. Go on educate yourself!

Im sorry I did misquote you, that was aimed at lEricPl who directly attacked me. ;)

Edit: your statement about not being able to afford a measly $10k lisence did irritate me though ;) Also, my personal opinions are no representation of the company I may work for, and are solely my own, and always will be. Keep in mind, you can't judge someones intent over what they write online. I was in a good mood untill lEricPl decided to make it personal by calling me ignorant!

Ohhh and Janos, sorry for hi-jacking your thread! IIS 6 has a few unreleased vulnerabilities that may explain your problems. Also you may want to upgrade your ASP engine as well if you haven't allready done so. Lastly, do you have any other applications querying the sql server in question that do not experience such latency?

Man oh man...

Tell us about these 'vulnerabilities' that cause ASP to serve pages slowly and tell us how we can all upgrade our 'ASP engine'.

1. Blame it on IIS6 'vulnerabilities'
2. Tell him to upgrade the 'asp engine'

ok cool, I have never said you can't afford it. that was just a comment not directed to anyone.

but the same way you are bashing windows 2003 there are a lot of vulnerabilities in FreeBsd , Red Hat etc. any system that is not configured properly is open to attacks. the problem with windows servers is they are used widely and most people think they can do it themselves and end up being hacked. as for IIS same goes for apache some really bad bugs on it.

as for you are solely responsible for what you say not your company think if Eric or I would want a server would we come to you ... no .. it's just that simple a lot of people here run their mouth but don't think twice about it. I have nothing against you put you prooved to be unprofessional that's all.
