I have a totally non-porn related question about cars...

What does it mean when a car burns oil up really quickly?? I mean, putting oil in the car every 3 weeks cause it keeps getting burned up. I asked a mechanic & he said "Thats really really bad." But never said why lol

anyone know?? is that the trans slippin??

Rings are shot, maybe the head gasket but you'd most likely notice that. You can probably nurse it along for a long time as long as you keep checking the oil. Start saving up for either a new motor, getting this one rebuilt, or a new car.

Um...I think I'm gonna stick with my blinker fluid answer for now. It's a sure thing.

If its a head gasket you'll see bubbles and different colors in your radiator when the car is running and its cap is off.

First make sure to check for leaks.... If its carbed put some tranny fluid down the carb... Might clean some of the valves off and help a little...

If its the "head gasket" as suggested check the radiator for oil on the water, if you see "gunge" in the rad your head gasket has prolly gone.

One way to be sure about the motor being "fucked" is to take it to a small shop and ask them to do a "compression test" this entails just taking the spark plugs out and attaching a compression meter to the cylinders, should not take them long to do.

In most cases it means the motor is tired ?worn out? although I have seen engines burn excessive oil if the breather is blocked I assume you see blue smoke from the exhaust when you drive along. Anyway just get it checked by a mechanic that you trust
They need to do a compression test, among other things but expect the worst

Alright, I will give it a shot.

Do you know the piston (it is the part below the combustion chamber that gets pushed down when an explosion happens). Well, below the Pistons, there is the crank, rings and bearings, and all other things. In order to keep these moving party lubricated, there is oil in that area.

Now, to ensure that no oil gets in the combustion chamber, there are Piston Rings. If those are used up, you will burn oil OR if your cylinder walls have widened (due to mileage or running on no oil) you will burn oil.

Did that make sense?

Your car is just being greedy. Teach it that gluttony is a sin.

About the engine.. check it out. It shows you the different parts of an engine in a simple animation.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm

When the transmission slips, it means either you have too much power for the transmission or, more likely in your case, the transmission is damaged (worn down). Could be actually many things.

BTW, replacing the piston rings, means a whole engine rebuild. If your cylinder walls are worn down or damaged they may need to be machined (bored out).

Already a bunch of responses but I will add if its an older car and your burning a quart every 3 weeks (you didnt say how many quarts, the age of the car or mileage) I wouldnt worry about getting anything fixed. If you don't see any leaks on your driveway or garage floor your most likely just burning it (bad rings etc. etc.).

Every 3 weeks isnt that bad if its a beater. You can run that thing for a long time as long as you don't beat the hell out of it and make sure you keep it topped up.

If its a newer car I would be concerned. Shit like this does happen though. Even the 01 Corvettes are known for oil consumption problems. Straight out of the factory some of the cars had ring problems.
