I have to create seperate email accounts so that I can use one purely for recieving internet spam. it's sad. who buys the stuff they are trying to sell in spam anyway?

People need to get over the "spam" problems.. Use your fucking delete key and its solved. If you got a kid then moderate their usage if its a problem for you. Most kids by the time their 13 have seen sex pictures or acts anyway, or are doing it themselves. Seems like to much fuss over a stupid case. And yea, it may waste bandwidth, but take it for what its worth and get over it...

Did you read the thread? What's the fucking use of telling GFY users to get over their spam problems? Go tell it to the consumers who aren't going to be buying from you anymore because they're scared of being spammed.
Or better still, shoot a few spammers.

Over the weekend (friday 9:00pm to monday 10:00 am) I got about 9500 emails not counting internal "event" notifications. Of the 9500 around 9000 were spam with the remaining being legitimate mail, bounces, viruses, etc. My spam filter catches about 99% of the spam I recieve, but generates enough false positives that I have to manually review the spambox daily. Today it took me around two and half hours to make sure nothing was improperly flagged as spam. Estimating this over the course of a year I loose between fifteen to twenty thousand dollars in lost productivity. How much "fuss" is that worth?

heh, yeah, i do the same thing, but they're generally migrated old email addresses.

what's really funny [sad?] is webmasters spamming webmasters to sign up for porn sites. lol, i don't know how many "cum fuck these hot babes" emails i get to webmaster accounts daily.

i think you are misinterpreting the study.

consumers are afraid that by buying something from amazon.com or something they will receive a slew of junk email resulting from their purchase.

which may or may not true.

this, however, is a result of big business tactics where email databases are shared and purchased amongst each other. it doesn't really have much to do with most spammers, as many of them won't have access to these huger lists of consumers because they wouldn't have a relationship as such with the company.

Last time I checked it was NOT my ebay & amazon.com email address that was receiving 200+ emails a day.

In fact, I NEVER get spam to any of my buying addresses.

While I am not getting quite that volume, it's pretty damn close. Got a nice little program that scans the deleted spam folder and automatically generates spam complaints to about everyone who takes them. Sure it doesn't lessen the spam, but ....... ;)

Anyway, who uses email much anymore?

i dont see how spam in general is scaring the customers away. it seems that the point they are making is people don't want to shop because they are afraid the shopping will cause the barrage of emails - i.e. the direct cause/effect relationship between their uneasiness to buy online is related to the merchant potentially disclosing/abusing their address.
