Cold air lingers across nation
Saturday, January 31, 2004 Posted: 7:15 PM EST (0015 GMT)

(AP) -- Arctic air made much of the Great Lakes and lower Midwest shiver Saturday, but mild conditions prevailed for much of the nation.

The Arctic high pressure system brought mostly clear skies, wind and very cold temperatures: Indianapolis International Airport set a record at 11 degrees below zero, and the wind chill hit 41 below in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. The system also produced heavy snow in northwestern New York when it passed over warmer Lake Erie, dropping 25 inches in Redfield, New York, over 36 hours.

A large high pressure system brought calm weather to much of the East, although southern Florida saw rain. A weak weather disturbance brought light snow to the Northern Plains.

Light rain fell in parts of Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and the Pacific Northwest. In the rest of the West, calm conditions and fair skies prevailed.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a midday high of 74 in Marathon, Florida, to a low of minus 33 in Park Rapids, Minnesota.
