Timely question for me. My home wireless died last night. The regular ethernet was ok but the wireless was dead. I messed around for hours with it trying to fix whatever I broke. It was Netgear MR314. FInally went to Fry's bought a LinksysWireless-G Broadband Router plugged it in - didn't configure anything and it works perfect!!!!!!!

Here is a question. I rent a Motorola cable modem from comcast for $5 month - am I better off buying one??? |

I first had a D-Link router and it was complete crap, and D-link has poor customer service for Canadians. I went with a wireless Linksys router and will never go back to D-link.

When we finally go totally wireless, we will go linksys.

They are made by Cisco, and they make the best routers...

I got my dlink for 50 bucks. The security sucks ass, their customer support doesn't exist, but hell it was only 50 bucks. I haven't had any problems and I've had mine for about a year.

I have a Linksys 4-port Ethernet DSL/Cable Router off my cable modem. No problems with it. Currently have all 4 ports in use. Some time ago I bought a Linksys Wireless G Access Point. It worked okay at first but then somehow my entire net connection would start dropping. It seem to happen every 10 or 15 minutes. No connectivity for anything at all. Had to be something with the router..or how the wireless and the router were communicating. Once I removed the Wireless Access Point and went to all wired, things went back to normal. The wireless is sitting in its box in my closet.

On the low end Netgear for sure on all router products. Even though Linksys was bought by Cisco, I've had problems with 'em. Yes, your's may work. Still being a Network Consultant, I continue to bring a number of cable, dsl and T1 networks on line.

Linksys still causes me problems as late as last week. Had to replace one right out of the box. Thought the Cisco buy made them a good choice. I like the programming of the Netgear router boxes better too. Simple enough for most anyone to install, but gives you needed options. For wireless, I suggest the higher frequency 5GHz models. Wireless phones at 2.4 GHz interfer sometimes. Some will say, they have it and it works. That's great, but I can point to some clients that had problems and I know of companies with 50+ users that had to swap out the 2 GHz wireless for the 5. If you have more than a handfull of users, I'd rethink the wireless. Remember that ya can go up to 1Gbps on wire now. Your DSL delivers at 1.5 Mbps and cable at 2 Mbps. Those are download speeds and that does not mean that cable is faster, you have to share that bandwidth with your neighbors. The point is, it only counts if you have a number of users on your network. OK, more than you wanted to know, I'll stop. |

this is for my house, two PC's will be hardwired in this room, one wireless pci for another PC in my daughters room, and a roaming laptop via pc card.

So I really don't need anything fancy, just something that works. : ) |
