Anyone get their dog fixed?

My chihuahua was a cryptorchid (undescended testicle) so we had to get the little guy fixed because the risk of him developing cancer was so high. So I drop the poor thing off after work yesterday and we go and pick him up today and I feel like a horrible person for doing that to him. Not only did they castrate him like they normally do, they had to make a good size incision in his abdomen to get the second one out.

The poor thing can hardly walk, has trouble getting comfortable because he is so sore and I feel so bad. We even paid the extra 30 bucks to get him a nice shot of pain med that will last 24 hours....but still..

Anyone else go through this? Did it take them very long before they felt better?

same thing happened with my dog. we had him fixed about 3 years ago. he was like a completely different dog the day i picked him up. he doesn't get so hyper anymore like he used to, but other than that he was back to normal in just a few days.

I have all of my animals spayed or neutered, and it generally isn't as bad for the males as it was for your little one because they normally don't have to go digging for the testicles. Yours may have a bit longer to heal, but then should be just fine.

Good luck, and thanks for having him neutered.

Always a good idea to get your dog fixed if you don't plan to breed them ;-)

My Husky had the same condition, had him neutered when he was less than a year old. Took about a week to heal, just make sure he doesn't try to pull off the stiching.
I also have a Chow chow, that isn't fixed, never caused a problem so why bother.

All my cats are fixed. My dog is fixed.. heck even out bunny is fixed. My vet gives them pain meds while they are there and sends them home with some for the first 2 or 3 days.

I've always had my pets fixed. Mother in law had a german shepherd she was keeping intact, but after 6 years of no breeding, he went quite nutty and took his guarding job a little too seriously. I have never seen a dog who needed to get laid so badly.

I used to have a terrier, and we got her fixed. I think it is tougher on the bitches than the males. Poor thing was fucked up for a week or so.

Had the cats fixed, too. One of them had a rough time. He had a nut that didn't drop. I think he was saving that one for a special occasion or something. He took a week to get back to normal, but the other ones were fine.

It hurts the male owner more then the male dog to get them fixed. The dog will be uncomfortable for a day or 2 but hes not going to give a fuck if his nuts are there or not. Its us that gives a shit because we picture ourselves without nuts when we do this to them

Its much better for them though. I had one of my Rotts fixed at an older age because he kept having urinary tract problems. Hes the same dog as he was before having them chopped. Same guarding instict same everything. Been through this with several.

Your little guy will be fine

I've been advised by every vet I know to have dogs and cats fixed, after they've finished growing, but before they are two years old.

When we interfere with their hormones by fixing them, we can interfere with the growth process, which can give them bone and structural problems later on in life.

But. After the age of two or so, their chances for cancer increase.

All of my dogs are fixed. There are enough strays and homeless pets out there.

Just love on the little guy all you can, he'll be feeling better in a few days.

My Sully had the same thing. At about a year and a half I got him fixed. The vet phoned me that day after I had dropped him off and said one of his nads hadn't descended and that it would be $20 extra.... as if I wouldn't get it done because of money. Sheesh. Anyway, he felt like total shit after, I just wrapped hiim in a blanket, put him in the car and took him home. Poor little guy (he was still fairly little then) even peed blood for a day or two. But he came around in about 3 days and was back to his cheery self, mostly.

The procedure did calm his hyperness a little, which was a good thing.

Here he is as of last year.....

Neutering didn't affect our dog one bit. Infact, he couldn't care less.
They day we did it, he was happy and hard to keep from bouncing around.
He seemed to think the whole experience was quite fun.
But he also likes going in for shots... (wierd dog)

However
if your or your pets self-esteem is in jeopardy, you can always buy him neuticles
