We have warnings like that in The Netherlands, only with hanging chains. If a truck hits the chains, an alarm will go off. A lot of trucks get (got) stuck in tunnels, etc. over here.
There are signs over here that state how high the tunnels are, but still drivers hit it. That is kinda retarded.
To be honest, the pic looks funny indeed, but my guess is it actually works (If the truckers actually stop after they hit it that is)Comment

I had a heavy load on the first trip, which I'd offloaded. Then, driving back, there was this horrible grinding screech, and I was jammed solid. Let some air out of the tyres and it was fine. My heart almost stopped though
