Boca Company Claims Cleanup of Anthrax-Infected Building a Patent Violation

A Boca Raton company is claiming the planned cleanup at the former American Media Inc. building is a violation of a patent it received for an anthrax decontamination product.

Custom Biologicals Inc. of Boca Raton sent a cease-and-desist letter Wednesday to Sabre Technical Services and Rudy Giuliani Partners -- the partners of new venture Bio-ONE that announced plans this month to clean up and occupy the former tabloid headquarters.

At issue is Sabre's plan to use heat and humidity to get the anthrax spores' protective coats to soften, allowing bacteria-killing chlorine gas to penetrate. The first claim listed in Custom Biologicals' patent, issued Dec. 2, is that bacteria spores are first rendered harmless by "providing sublethal heat and/or adding a chemical activating agent."

"If they manipulate the environment to open that spore up, then it violates our patent," said Chuck Baugh, Custom Biologicals vice president. "We have to stand and protect our patent. We have a lot at stake here."

Freaks me totally out to be that close to real WMD's. Of all the cities in the US, the fuckers had to go and pick Boca to hit with Anthrax.

I just hope this cleanup company knows what its doing and these spores don't go airborne and head this way.

Hard to be believe its taken 3 years for the Feds to figure out how to clean this crap out of there. WTF??????????/

No its all sealed up. The US government didn't know how to clean it up 100% in a safe way that would not release the Anthrax spores into the local neighborhoods potentially.

Within 5 minutes of that building you have some of the wealthiest people in the country, including several of the Forbes 400, so there was a huge amount of political pressure to make sure no fuck ups happen.

It's a little more legitimate than Acacia, and I see how since it isn't causing any immediate harm to anyone then it's not as bad to ask for something inreturn for their patent, as opposed to people being in danger and then telling them to stop from helping them..

Patents are fucked up generally.

They probably invested a bit in research to discover this though. But I still struggle to see how they were able to patent something so general. I guess they are just like any other company trying to make money where ever possible. If you had the patent to coca-cola would you take it for all its worth
