Cogent - What's the Real Deal
What is the deal with Cogent, are they good or not? Are they friendly to Adult?

It's not a bad network. Yes, they are adult friendly but just don't spam.
I haven't been on their network in a while but they do offer "the deal". They lost their peering arrangements with AOL a while back but since then fixed it. They ended up just buying another network or something to fix that issue but most networks don't like the push pull ratios they do. If you buy enough bw, there are a few other networks that will beat their pricing. |

Certain carriers are better than others and others have attributes that are more appealing as well.
It all comes down to what are you looking to do with the services that you are interested in having on Cogent? |

If it's mission critical, I wouldn't put it behind Cogent, if you can afford downtime or no route to hosts once in awhile, go nuts. Just remember you get what you pay for so don't go fuming mad when it suffers a hiccup.

Why would you go for Cogent when there are better providers offering the same prices.

Depends on the city - they're still working on bringing their network up to decent standards in some places. It doesn't get much cheaper then cogent in pricing; but I wouldn't put anything mission critical on it. They are adult friendly, however, I've seen providers get the plug pulled without warning due to spam violations.

Find me a carrier that offers it - not dedicated server, or colo provider as we have our own facility. Find me an actual carrier that's going to drop fiber into one of our facilities for 30$/mbit (Port fee included, install fee waived, portable IP's included).
Cogent lists: FAST-E (100 Mbps) $3,000/month That's 30$/mbit USD for Fast-E connection to your facility (used for hosting) which is about 40$/mbit CAD...

2+ gigE's and it's under $30. Can't mention names because of non-disclosures. |

![]() Care to rephrase, cuz I seriously don't understand that one. You said even in Canada, 50$/mbit for a Carrier is expensive. I seriously invite you to find me that price, or cheaper, in quality bandwidth (non-cogent). My quotes from Yipes/NAC blend, we've already got 360Networks, Bell and MCI, so I know what those run. We've also got space in Peer1 Montreal, so I know what that runs....who do you think will compete with 70$/mbit Canadian for NAC/Yipes quality? Honestly....

You can get cheapass pricing from shitty aleron or wiltel also, sub 30 on 1gbit...one of them sub 20......performance is just as shitty if not worse than cogent thou.

I've actually got a deal running right now thats $3500 for 100Mbps+Cabinet+Power. If you're interested, I can hook that up. The other place is $2500 a month for 100Mbps, then you pay for the rack an extra $400-500 or so. Their BW is not bad, but not as good as the other deal I'm pushing.

Cogent was having some cash problems recently... though they always seem to keep their ship floating still.
Then again, most providers these days have cash problems. |

Running fiber instead of GigE's you will have more charges, first for running the fiber and then again for the port costs on their end for which they will probably charge you. You may get a better rate but then you are committing for 1000Mbps instead of the 100Mbps in their $3,000 special. Which of course you cant even push a full 100Mbps on so the actual per Mbps price is more than $30 per Mbps. On the gigE you can get it cheaper but if you are pushing that much bandwidth and you need to penny pinch and run cogent you are doing something wrong. Sure maximizing profits is good, but cogent just isnt stable enough to let you sleep well at night when running that much traffic.
And dont forget the benefits of multihomed. |

This thread is basically 100% on target.
![]() Cogent is pretty decent network, but not mission critical. There are other companies offering similar pricing. Cogent is still losing massive $$, but their Market Cap has increased from $3mil to $26mil in the last year.

We have been using Cogent Banwith for over a year now and i have to say i really do not know why everyone is so against these guys???? They have been rock solid and we never had downtime (even during the NYC Blackout ) Now that they have consolidated their AS numbers all into 1 the latency on their network has gone down quite a bit (the latency on the cogent network is less than the latency our other feed from MFN)and now that they are bringing their services and PRICING to europe you can go wrong. So to all of you out there who hate Cogent bandwith (since there are so many people who listen to others opnions and not the true facts) you do not know what your missing. And their pricing cant be beat they give us 10mb for $500 . Hit me up if you have any questions.
