Although a Harley may look cool at the traffic lights, thats really where the fun stops. Nothing beats the adrenalin of trashing a fast bike.

I would suggest a 999R, its not to heavy, heaps of power and great handling.

Totally a sport bike...

Why anyone would get a Harley for purely recreational purposes is beyond me.

don't get over 600 cc are you nuts... I would not get a bike under 750 remember.. the bike goe's how fast you want it to... but a 600 will cut out when my R1 keeps going... I have toped at 214mph and it's nice... but if we were to ride I could ride it like a 600 and just lay off the throtel.. know what I mean... but it's nice to have the power... my first bike was a 01 R1 my 2nd was an 02champ R1 now I am waiting on the 04 for the tucked tailpipe so I can really get into my turns.....

my buddy just got the 600rr and it feels like crawling to me.... I am not scared of power... but thats why I spent 3 months of 2001 not being able to move my right arm... me and the car did not get along at 80mph in a 4th gear stand up..... I say the faster the better.... once you get over the shaky point which is usually 147-155 it's all smooth sailing after that.... get some joe rocket leathers.. and your golden as long as you don't hit something.... or even worse... a highside in the turns..... but I am been down a few times.... was not the bikes fault it was mine and my lack of paying attention to what I was doing

I get your point but I've had countless newb friends who jump on a r1 as their FIRST EVER BIKE and fuck it up real bad. I just don't think its worth the money(plastics) or yer ass to risk it with your first bike. Obviously some people can jump on the r1 right outta msf course and do fine but thats not everyone.

I have both a 1999 Harley and a 1998 Suzuki 1200 and the Suzuki is definitely a lot more fun. The Harley is cool and chicks dig it but the thing vibrates like hell and is not as comfortable.

I'm just wondering the reason's why...if I were to get a bike myself, I'd definitely get a Harley.

I'd fucking kill myself on something like an R1 !

bs... ive ridden gay scooters 115cc in bangkok like 50 times, and then i went to the beach town without traffic like the big city here and rented a Shadow.... learned the clutch is easy so i went and got a 400cc honday CBR the next time... it was fast and fun... the next time i rented an R-1 and that bitch was TOO fast.... so i settled on the CBR-900 but if i were to buy, i'd go with an R-1 (1100cc)... and i've only ridden on a normal sized motorcycle maybe 15 times.....

and yes, i do kinda have a deathwish...

"Seat time" is an important thing to consider when purchasing a bike. Are you a noob to motorcycles? If so, I tend to agree that keep your first one under 600cc and buy a used one. The last thing you want to do is lay down, or worse, a $12,000 piece of machinery and then have to pay to fix it, much less yourself.

I used to pit for a buddy of mine that raced superbikes. He had a Ducati 916, and when I saw him and 30 other bikes make turn 1 at Brainard at 178MPH 4 abreast I thought - "OK, I've got damned little seat time on a bike, and all it takes is one oil or sand slick to fuck me. So think before you buy." At Hearland In'l raceway in Topeka a good friend of ours was merely on a practice run on his Kaw 1200 and lost it in a chicane. He broke his hip in two places. Gareth and I were going to go in on an F4 and do endurance racing, but a moment of sanity changed my mind.

Harley vs Sport though? Hmm.. I'd have to say go with a modest sportbike to start off with. Harley's are heavy and do need maintenance regularly to tune them and such. Get your feet wet with something more easy to handle - and pick up when you lay it down (you WILL lay it down, lol).

The R1 is NOT for beginning cycle owners, it's a lean mean racing machine and capable of incredible power. The winner of the superbike race at brainard in 1999 took turn 14 (the final turn to the finishline) pulling a wheelie for 1/4 mile down the straightaway to the finish line.

hehe, Riders are freaks! I dunno how fast the winner of that race was going by the time it was done but he came out of that turn and floored it. He was screaming doen the straightaway when he crossed the finishline in that wheelie. I was standing on pit row right near the turn and he came out of it with the front wheel off the ground and he just amped it up the whole way down the straightaway. Honestly, I don't know if it was brilliant riding or pure stupidity and arrogance. LOL

Sportbikes are hot, but a GOOD harley (not one of those 1960 piece of shits) surely would be much better. The noise, the feel, the girls...

Harleys are for cruisers. Sport bikes are for riders.

serious motorcyclists will ride sportbikes, and wear protective gear, and the kick will be physics and function.

posers and amateurs riders will drive harleys with hair blowing ing the wind, and spend lots of time polishing chrome and coordinating their faux badguy fashion image.

generally the rider's IQ is apparent by the machine.

me, hayabusa.

Get both. I used to own a sportbike and now own a Harley. I now want to get a sportsbike again and a chopper.

Harley's are fun for cruising around town and setting off car alarms (picking up women to).

Sportbikes give you that rush when going fast. If your not going fast though, they aren't worth it. They're just a back ache then.

It pretty much comes down to what you want to do. If you want to go out cruising around, get the Harley. If you want to go fast, get a sportsbike. If you want to do both, get both.

why are you getting a bike in the first place? anyway you go you'll get laid just by having a bike. imho crotch rockets are great for the rush, cruisers are great for being seen.
