Anyone from Vancouver get an ITIN?

Wondering if anyone from vancouver has gone to the
trouble of getting an ITIN in order to then get an EIN
for your US based corporation?
If so, did you get your documents notarized by
the notary at the US consulate in vancouver, or
did you drive down to the IRS office in Bellingham?

I don't believe you need a ITIN number to get an EIN number. I thought the ITIN number is just for personal bank accounts and so forth.

In order to get an EIN via an SS-4 form you need to provide
either a SSN, ITIN. Since I'm canadian I don't have an
SSN. So I've been told to get an ITIN instead.

Actually my above statement might be incorrect. I'm just
talking to the IRS now and i might be able to get the EIN
without the ITIN.

Also canadian, when we incorporated in the states we did not have to get an ITIN and that is because we used what is called a "Resident Agent'. It is a good idea to have a resident agent...however, I still think an ITIN is not required because the shareholders of a US corporation do not have to be American and therefore you should be able to get a EIN number for the corporation. Furthermore, you are not opening any accounts in your name so to have an ITIN number is just another draconian measure by the IRS to tag you, if indeed you need it

Yes, what you are saying appears to be correct as I'm just finding out. We did use a resident agent. However, I guess my resident agent didn't fully understand this stuff as she kinda led me
to believe that i needed this ITIN. But upon further discussions with the IRS it seems like this isn't necessary. Anyway, I've got
my EIN application in with the IRS now - hopefully i'll get an EIN shortly.

How long did it take to get your EIN once you put in the application?

- thanks for the great info, Scorpion3600.

It was several years ago, but I can't imagine it was more than a month or two at the most. Hit me up on icq if you want to chat some more as we do business out of the states too but am personally from Vancouver.... icq: 92178384...Alberta is a great place to do business out of too, a company earning up to $300k or so of net profit per year only pays something like about 12% in tax under new small business legislation!
