normal to sign a contract prior to buying a domain?

seems a little odd to me - i don't have it in my hands yet, just curious if this is a normal thing in the domain acquisition world.

yeah it's normal as long as it's setting forth the terms of the agreement. get a signed copy. if either one of you tries to fuck the other, the person who got fucked would have a cause of action.

for over a couple hundred bucks or if you just have to make sure you get it, i'd churn out a quick contract (and I have) and fax it over

grab a biz law book if you don't have one, read the contracts section (for this...read the whole book though)

i'll be paying in full before getting the domain. yet he still wants me to sign a contract, just makes me wonder what sort of limits he might try to put on things. have to wait till tomorrow to look it over.

the more money you pay for it the more likely a contract. I bought one of my domain names for $1,500 without a contract but it cant hurt to have one.

Well if you read over the contract, or get your lawyer too, I don't see why it could hurt you at all either.

If he has stupid clauses in there get 'em removed.

I've bought a domain before with a contract, makes me feel better about it anyways.

Yes, perfectly normal and expected if its a major domain acquisition.

Rick and I did 28 pages of agreements in total for Men from beginning to the closing date. And there were about 60 pages for the holding company setup. Had custom escrow agreement also.

The lawyers were smiling all the way to the bank during the months it took to get all the wording and terms agreed on.

But on this level you have to cover every possible thing and we did.

It was actually remarkable at one point the deal almost got blown completely over just a sentence or two in the indemnification clauses, with each law firm wanting their wording to be the one used. It was a surreal experience thanks to the lawyers on both sides not wanting to budge and it literally even got to the GFY point a couple times.

Im a paranoid type when it comes to sending money by mail/online.

I would suggest using escrow.com as mentioned above. They make the entire transfer process go smoothly, even with a contract.

From now on I alwas sign up contracts and always use escrow.
I have a contract example if you wish.

ok, not always - I sold a worthless domain for $30 two days ago, but I think you're askign about more valuable domains

Good word that had an "s" at the end.. correct spelling would have been "es" at the end.
