Now we just need to find life. If there's life right a the bottom of the ocean which survives thanks to hot air vents, then there could be life on mars. I think it would answer a lot of questions about how life envolves and whether it is something that could be replicated throughout the universe.

(to be said in an electonic voice - like the old guy in the wheel chair that does science programmes)

Just to clarify whoever the hell thinks there might ACTUALLY be water on mars, there is NO water on mars at ALL.. JEsus christ people, Mars are basically no atmosphere at all, the only way water could stay on a planet with no atmoshpere would be to be frozen, and that has been confirmed in one the poles of Mars.. But don't be expecting a canyon with a flowing river in it..

What they are saying is that the canyon photographed was likely carved by water, and if so there might be evidence that life ONCE existed on mars.. But there is no way in high hell that unfrozen water, or even frozen water in mass quantities exists on the planet. In the planet maaybee, and by maybe that is a 1 in a million shot.. But not on the surface..

Yeah pretty much.. Mars ONCE had an atmosphere and the existance of ice on the pole proves that unequivocally, but running water would have long since been gone. The signs on the planet's surface of water erosion are MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of years old. It's by no means an indication that there IS running water on the planet, nor that there is currently life.

Ok answer me this dumb question.....

Ice melts and tuns to water with a temperature rise.....

Mars is a HOT planet with ice at the poles......

Surely the ice must melt or heat somewhere???? even if it's heat from volcanic events that warms the ice / water?

Anyway... I guess its just pure coincdence that Bush was met with tons of criticisim about wanting to go to Mars...

now viola! Water on Mars.

-- we have to go now & no more critics.

Bush always gets what he wants

I wonder what's really up with Mars... why does the Bush administration want to go there so badly now?

They found oil.

Venus is closer to the Sun. Mars is farther. Mars also doesn't have volcanoes. You need enought water to cause plate shifts, which causes lava, mountains and volcanoes. Like California is on a plate that shifts back and forth between the North America plate, which causes friction, which make lava.

What I wonder is if there have been any microprobes from earth on this stuff that we have been sending to Mars that will eventually cause life on there.

Drives me nuts that people don't support the Bush plan on going to Mars. He caved to polls and dropped in from the SOTU speech

Whow great news, finaly , after billions and billions of dollars they can tell those 1.000.000.000 people that don't have drinkable water that they found it on mars.
For less than $500 whole villages can be provided with water pumps and filtering solutions.

Just FYI this is s topographical map and the blue at the bottom is not water, but rather an indication of depth. The water found was ice at tthe poles.
