I don't know of very many punk bands from late 70s Canada...though one in particular that made quite an impact was Teenage Head...really really good shit, lemme see if I can dig some up.

downloading ...I love electro/80's stuff..I run an 80's net radio station and I had to schedule in an 'alternative 80's' block everyday just so I could play my kind of music for atleast part of the day.

Nice! Let me know what you think!...This was released in 2001 I think but they do have that 80's sound, with a bit more punch or somethign....hard to describe hehe

Sarah_Jayne 01-21-2004 07:11 PM

not bad...when is it from? Sounds a bit like Durran Durran meets Howard Jones but with cradle of filth on valium doing the background bits.

Ok, I dug up one Teenage Head song, I've got the LP burned to CD but it's at a friend's house.

Unless you're talking about new punkrock bands....heavy drumming is fucking fine if you ask me! :) (bands like Lagwagon etc...where the drummer is damn tight)

Retro Tunes - soundtrack to a decade..lol

I usually have scheduled in weekly shows like - cover story when I play some of the modern covers against the originals(and usually complain about them) and retro movie spotlight but I took them out of rotation for when I went to vegas because I wouldn't be here to update them

At any rate, I think it just came out of one of the alternative blocks so be careful, there might be some junk in there to please the masses :)

Sex Pistols - Pretty Vacant gets my vote for best drum intro of all time.

Bookmarked. Will give it a try one of these days. :thumbsup

I do like "ordinary" 80's pop too - sort of Nick Kershaw "Wouldn't it be good", ELO "Mister Blue Sky", etc - still good after all those years.

(Right now, it's Georg Friedrich Händel on the CD player - but that's a whole different ballgame as they say).

jollyperv 01-21-2004 07:29 PM

Sarah you are so right.

As a drummer in a punk rock band, I can not stress enough as to the importance of certain things. For instance, a snare tuned too high will turn me off to something immediately...In the mix, I like to here a lot of high hat, not as much kick drum and a good dry snare tuned in a mid range.

Drums are what really sets apart older recordings from newer ones. If you've listened to enough stuff, old and new, you can pretty much tell what era it was recorded just from the drum sound. They used different techniques back then, like condenser mics on the snare and fewer mics all together.

I've actually researched this quite a bit...me and the guy who records us sit around and try all kinds of stuff to get that 77' sounding snare drum, and so far we've failed. We're going in this sunday to finish our LP, I'm gonna try some new things to try to get it sounding like, for instance, any dead boys song.

oh me too! I have a thing for "Wouldn't it be good" actually..my husand makes fun of me for it but I think it is a good song. I was more warning about the Gloria Estefan that was playing when I posted :)

I know you said you weren't a metal fans, but just out of curiosity I want to know what you think of this drummer:
Quo Vadis - On the shores of ithaka

They're local, saw'em a couple of time live, it's hard to believe...

jollyperv 01-21-2004 07:40 PM

Oh fuck oh Fuck, sarah have you ever heard of The Saints from australia, late 70's.

You gotta hear this stuff. Fuck, gimme a minute.

it is good to know i have paid attention to what I hear.

A while back hubby gave me a lecture about how when T-rex and glam rock was hot in the UK the drums were a real feature - for example sometimes having two drummers on stage ( though addam and the Ants picked that up and made it big later) and that since punk in the UK was in some ways a backlash to glam (which was huge here and btw, I equally love glam or different reasons) they were used to hearing pronounced drums. Who knows if he was right but works for me :)

I love gutair but these days it can be used INSTEAD of having a strong drum and as much of a slave I am to chunky gutair I know it is at its best when it is set against equally chunky drumming.

There's a drummer like that dude here in Atlanta...the band is called Mastadon, it's kind of math metal...I'm not a real fan of the music but jesus fucking christ can they play...it's cool to go out to a show and see real musicians once in awhile, especially ones who aren't full of themselves.

I feel the same way...there were so many bands, so many that hardly anybody has heard of that just fucking rock. It's really overwhelming knowing that we'll never hear it all :(

Ok hear you go, you'll like these.

This one skips in one small part, it's taken from vinyl.
The Saints-Lost and Found.mp3

The Saints-RunDown.mp3

finally got the first one to download - LOVING it. I guess the australian accent allowed them to have the same kind of snarl in their voice as the UK punkers tended to have.

Hey Sarah,

Then I have to send you my son's CD. They are alternative rock. I think you would enjoy their music. Not heavy but more soothing kind of music.

Let me know if you might interested in listening ?
