I have a wireless card which will allow me to work on a wireless network anywhere providing that they give you the permissions to do so.
There is a new system coming out where we are called HOTSPOTS and places like starbucks and even th elocal pub have Wireless ADSL to hook you up. ![]()

get a card that is compatible for both the 802.11a and 802.11b (or whatever the numbers are). basicly one that will work with the 2.4 and 5.4 gig networks. i have a seperate card for each, so i have to play around to see what types are around, but you can avoid that if you have the dual card.

For example: If you wanted a wireless network at home using ADSL you would have to purchase a wireless router and then a card. Then you plug your ADSL modem into the wan port and away you go, you'll need to check the security settings on the router too. That is all you need for a wireless home network, if you wanted to get longer range you will need ACCESS POINTS. Now if you wanted to go to the Airport with a wireless connection you'll need an ISP that does the hotspots so you can connect over the wireless networks in the hotspot areas. You can't just go anywhere and it works!

All you need is a Wireless card for your PC. There are two widespread standards right now 802.11b and 802.11g. 802.11b transfer data at 11Mb/s while 802.11g transfers data at 54Mb/s. To put all this into perspective your DSL connection is between 1 and 2 Mb/s. For websurfing, telecommuting, writting e-mail, etc... an 802.11b card will suffice (that's what I have). Once you have your wireless card installed in your laptop you have to look for a wireless access point in your vicinity. They have programs available on the 'Net that will do this for you. What you are looking for is Wireless access points that are available to the public. Here in New York City they have many publicly available places where you can go on-line and do your on-line business. You need to check where you live where you could get on-line. Usually Starbucks, McDonalds, etc... charge you a couple of bucks to use their connection for an hour. There's a website where you could check to see what's available in your neck of the woods: http://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/

Verizon are pouring $1 Billion into a nation-wide wireless network this year. They had a very sucessful trial in Washington D.C and California and hope to get the whole lot up and running over the next two years.
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/3909617/ Some McDonalds are giving away wireless access too. Check around and see who's doing what. Apart from that, you can keep an eye out for Warchalk marked networks: http://www.warchalking.org/

Get yourself an 802.11b or 802.11g PCMCIA card. g is faster, but network may not take advantage of extra speed. Newer laptops usualy have it built in.
Some hotels in Europe have wifi service, like the one I'm at now. T-Mobile is doing a lot in UK, Germany and Czech. There are serveral others as well. Only problem is it's not cheap ![]()

You might want to check out a Sprint PCS wireless PC Card.
http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/Ph...07470 7577141 Costs $170 to buy it, monthly plan rates vary depending on how much data you want to eat. I got unlimited for $80/mo with 12 month agreement. Not sure what current rates are, probably varies depending on where you live. Speed is pretty good. In-between DSL and dialup. Service seems to be available everywhere. I had it in my car for a drive from Lincoln to Des Moines and it never lost the connection. It works pretty slick. Once you install the softare, just pop the card in when you want to use it and you're on the net in a few seconds. |
