$1 million for catching a bass?

Most coveted fishing world record claim is rejected

Angling officials have rejected a Californian woman's claim to have broken the most coveted fishing record in history, by landing a 22-pound 8-ounce bass.

The International Game Fish Association says Leaha Trew's evidence was too weak, despite having two other witnesses who saw the massive fish.

The 45-year-old mother also weighed the fish on an IGFA-certified hand-held scale, took measurements and then a photograph before releasing it back into Spring Lake.

However Ms Trew didn't photograph the fish next to a tape measure or an object for size reference.

As a result, IGFA biologists examined the photo to see if the fish's weight fell within the range of the 29-inch length, 25-inch girth measurements. They concluded that it did.

"As far as what I have seen, there's nothing for rejection," IGFA records administrator Doug Blodgett initially said. But two weeks later, the body has changed its mind, saying to claim a record the applicant must have numerous witnesses, lots of photos and measurements of the fish.

It says claimants must also take the weight of the fish, photos of the measurements, photos of the fish on a certified scale and photos of the angler with the fish, reports Mercury News.

A world record bass could be quite lucrative to the person who catches it. Many believe it's worth at least $1 million in endorsements. The record is 22 pounds, 4 ounces, caught by George Perry at Montgomery Lake in Georgia, US, in 1932. His fish was weighed on a certified postal scale.

Ms Trew could not be reached for comment. Trew kept a low profile throughout the record-qualifying process and didn't speak to reporters.

If that chick really did catch that fish...she's gotta be reading that and kicking herself for being stupid enough to throw away a fish worth $1 million in endorsements.

This makes we want to go bass fishing this spring.
