Can A Parking Ticket Effect Your Credit??

I got a parking ticket about 3 years ago that I refused to pay because I did indeed pay for 2 hours parking. The parking company had now sent it to Collection and no matter what I say to the parking company they will not listen even though I still to this day have the purchased parking tickets in my possesion.

Do I ignore their threats or just pay the thing??...but I know I am in the right

just send them a copy of proof that you did indeed pay for the parking, send it certified via your lawyer and tell them that any and all future correspondance should be done through him since they are pursuing something they should not be

Tell the collection company you want proof that the debt is valid and that you dispute the validity of the debt. Do this in writing. They cant collect on it any further until they mail you proof. Them saying you owe it is not proof.

if it is in collections it will effect your credit, whether valid or not.

You need to take care of the problem by either providing proof you paid it, or pay it again

Wrong. Do what I said, and if the collection agency puts it on your credit before proving it, they have violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and they owe you money.

(b) If the consumer notifies the debt collector in writing within the thirty-day period described in subsection (a) that the debt, or any portion thereof, is disputed, or that the consumer requests the name and address of the original creditor, the debt collector shall cease collection of the debt, or any disputed portion thereof, until the debt collector obtains verification of the debt or any copy of a judgment, or the name and address of the original creditor, and a copy of such verification or judgment, or name and address of the original creditor, is mailed to the consumer by the debt collector.

pay your lawyer x to avoid paying y

X>Y

then you could charge the company for your lawyer fees and send it to collections

yes, it can. anything unpaid that goes to collections will end up on your credit unless you take whatever steps are necessary to rectify the situation.

If it is in collections for long enough and the collections company are assholes (they usually are), they can get a judgement against you.

A judgement against you will effect your credit MORE than missing payments.

Either prove you paid for parking or just pay the fine again. They have you by the balls. There is no upside for you, only downside potential.

Look, do what I've said. I've used this tactic on over 10 bullshit collection agencies collecting on "debts" where companies wanted to collect on bullshit charges that I had either already paid or never existed in the first place. I've NEVER heard a response once I send the dispute letter in asking for proof of the debt. NEVER.
