Good luck man! I did the Atkins diet a couple years ago, and it totally worked. I went from 185lbs to 140lbs.:thumbsup

Best part is, I managed to keep it off without needing to diet again.

Here's why atkins works. Carbs are your body's #1 source of energy. When you remove them from your diet you go into STARVATION MODE. This is why you loose weight. Your body starts using fat as a source of energy... however it's also using muscle! That's right! While your shedding lbs of fat, your also becoming a WEAKLING! Your muscles go into a cannibalistic state and they become your source of energy because at this point your EXTREMELY malnutritioned!

I've seen many people go on this Atkins diet.... all have lost 20-60lbs each... and guess what??? As soon as they stopped the diet they gained EVERY POUND BACK... PLUS SOME!

You people are fooling yourselves thinking that a diet of steak and cheese is going to make you a healthy person.

Like I said earlier... this diet is for LAZY fuckers that don't stand a chance in the first place.

You want to loose some weight and get fit??? Try going to the fucking GYM!!!!

Wrong. Putting your body into Ketosis is not the same as starving yourself and so does not consume muscle.

You mean that as soon as someone resumes eating in a way that made them fat in the first place they will get fat again? Amazing.

Look for a better alternative. Atkins will definitely take the pounds off, but will kill your energy leve along the way. As soon as you try to go back to a more balanced diet... kaboom! you gain all your weight back and then some.

don't do it.

The low carb diets do not kill your energy level at all. When your on the diet you don't have the bloodsugar peaks and valleys and so most people actually have more energy.

If you go back to a BALANCED diet you will not gain the weight back. If you go back to the typical American diet you will gain it back but since that is what got you overweight in the first place what else would you expect.

You are extremely misinformed, and this is not even worth arguing with you.

Maybe I should quit my part time job as a personal trainer and go on the atkins diet.:1orglaugh

listen up asshat, doesn't matter what your build is, unless you have a miserable metabolism, you want to have at LEAST 1.5 grams of protein entering your system per pound of body weight when working out. now, that aside, carbs turn into glucose which gets stored in fat cells if not burned off. maybe you should quit as a part time trainer and I take over

axelcat 01-16-2004 10:08 AM

WRONG AGAIN!

Even through a HEALTHY DIET, after atkins weight goes back on as FAT, leaving you with more fat and less protein than you started off with, which leaves you feeling even more out of shape than before, and can start off a vicious circle of yo-yo dieting.

Yo-yo dieting messes up your metabolism, and may even raise the levels of harmful cholesterol in the blood, increasing your risk of arterial disease and heart problems.

Low-carbohydrate and high-protein plans are potentially dangerous. The diets often contain too much saturated fat and not enough fibre, and lack of carbohydrates puts the body into ketosis. Ketosis is the abnormal metabolic state with unpleasant side effects such as bad breath, nausea, and puts you into a catabolic state! Meaning that it causes you to lose muscle. That's a fact! . The diet can also place a strain on the kidneys. The 'science' behind the diet has been disagreed with by every health professional on the planet!

Get a CLUE before spouting info like it's fact. Sure, you may have "results" with Atkins... but it sure as hell is the WRONG way to go about getting healthy!

Good luck, your going to need it. Oh, and watch out for high blood pressure, because your at SERIOUS risk of a heart attack before 40 with your methodology.

:thumbsup

KRL 01-16-2004 10:15 AM

The Atkins diet works by reducing the carb intake. Most friends I've seen try it have dropped 15 to 20 lbs. However its very hard to stay on indefinitely, and usually by about 3 to 6 months the cravings overwhelm the mind because now that they are skinnier they think ok I have room for some carbs again and they go right back where they were before.

Belive whatever the hell you want... Just know this one truth. Crash diets may work for a short period of time. However the only way to be healthy and stay healthy is through a good diet and exercise.

Diet & exercise... what's so hard to comprehend about this? You really think these extreme diets are the way to go???

I feel sorry for ya'll as you'll never make it past they yo-yo faze into good health with this mindset.

You really have no idea of what you are talking about. After reaching the weight you want you slowly increase your carbs to a point where you are not losing any more but are not gaining. How is that going to make you fat again?

You are so full of shit.

The notion that the Atkins will force your body to break down muscle is incorrect. Only individuals on very low-calorie diets can lose muscle mass, because they have an inadequate protein intake.

So long as you have extra body fat, ketosis is safe and natural. There is nothing harmful, abnormal or dangerous about ketosis.

Philadelphia., PA -- A 3-center study led by researchers at the Weight and Eating Disorders Program of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine reports the results of the first controlled trial of the Atkins Diet. The Atkins Diet limits carbohydrates but permits unrestricted amounts of protein and fat. Compared to a conventional, high- carbohydrate, low-calorie approach, Atkins dieters lost twice as much weight at 3 and 6 months but there was no difference between the groups at 1 year. Despite the lack of differences in weight loss at 1 year, the Atkins dieters had significantly greater increases in good cholesterol (HDL) and greater decreases in triglycerides.

The study, to be published in the May 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, was led by Gary Foster, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Clinical Director of the Weight and Eating Disorders Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Samuel Klein, MD of Washington University in St. Louis and James Hill, Ph.D. and Holly Wyatt, M.D. of the University of Colorado were the lead investigators at the other centers.

Atkins doesn't give you license to eat all you want of certain types of food. It just asks you to LIMIT the amount of carbs you intake..especially during the first 2-3 weeks of the diet, so your body will start burning fat instead of carbs.

So make it 2-3 eggs max & maybe ONE steak tartar for breakfast. Eat sensibly..and remember to try and keep your carb intake to or under 20 grams daily for the first 2-3 weeks.

Good luck on the diet!

What this says is correct-o-mundo! I have lost 35 lbs of ugly since my wife and I started and she has lost more! It works if you read the book and do it right.

Keep up the good work:thumbsup

Um.. I disagree. I'm diabetic and I have to watch consumption of any carbs because they spike my blood sugar. I've read Dr. Atkins' books. Have you?

His diet is often misinterpreted. It's not about eating 5 lbs of bacon a day, it's about restricting carbs. The first 2 weeks are pretty extreme, but then you move on to eating more vegetables.

You don't have to eat bacon and pork fat. You can eat chicken and fish and other low fat meats.

I'm replacing my white flour carbs with veggie carbs. I'm replacing white starches with whole grains. I'm eating more meat instead of more carbs. My doctor says I'm 100% on track and my blood test results echo that.

It's not an easy, quick fix, but it's better than eating a big bowl of pasta and taking more glucophage like the US Food Pyramid wants me to do.

Maybe true for some..but not for most.
I've done a lot of reading on this subject, and have been on the "diet" (lifestyle change) since 03/03. I've lost 45 pounds in less than 6 months, and haven't put it back on.

I don't get hungry, don't have cravings I can't handle. I do give myself "treats"..but I learned to eat SENSIBLY along with working out.

Where do you guys keep comming up with "ppl think that once they're on the atkins diet, that's all they have to do"?

Atkins and all of the people who write the cookbooks, diet books that are carb related EMPHASIS the need for excercise and working out.

IF people are not working out..it's not because Atkins says there is no need to..it's because they are badly uninformed or poorly motivated to work out. But then that's true of ANY diet, not just Atkins.

hottoddy 01-16-2004 01:58 PM

Atkins is great. The long-term key is to get past induction and work enough good carbs (those with lower glycemic impact) into your diet so you stick with it. This is the ultimate challenge. Sure, people who go back to pounding the simple carbs (sugar, white flour, rice, pasta, potatoes) are gonna gain it right back - just like with any diet. People who only do Atkins hardcore (meat, cheese, eggs) to drop some quick weight are always gonna have trouble with yo-yoing because that kind of diet is not maintainable. Also, I don't think any Atkins follower woud ever say that exercise and healthy living isn't important.

BradShaw 01-16-2004 02:00 PM

Your confusing being skinny with being in shape. Two totally different things. Atkins will make you skinny, sure. Exersise however will get you in shape.:winkwink:

Mack 01-16-2004 04:12 PM

Keep in mind a few things.

"you will gain it back when you eat NORMAL again""

Yes, this is true. If you go back to eating a High carb diet and
making poor food choices you will gain the weight back.

"Atkins is a lifestyle."

Damn right it is. and I would suggest anyone who is going to try this lifestyle to spend a couple of dollars and by the book. It explains everything in great detail . If your gonna spend the money might as well know what to buy.

I am down from 235 to 175 has been off for 18months. This way of life started working for me when I stopped listening to others , read the book, and followed the directions. it's not hard, you just need to be commited.

I eat well, I work out, I feel better than ever and have never had a problem..

Old diet.

breakfast: Then- Frosted Flakes NOW_ Bacon and Eggs/w cheese

Snack: Then-Bag of Chips NOw- Pepperoni

Lunch: Then _ Big Mac Fries and coke NOW- Hot Wings and
Ice Tea

Dinner- Then- Hamburger fucking Helper, veggie, bread,
NOw- Steak- greenbeans- and whole wheat.

Snack- Then- Big Ass bowl of Ice Cream NOW- Big Ass Bowl of Atkins Low Carb Ice Cream.

And about 64oz of water a day.

I am not starving. but if I chose to change back eating like the fat fuck I was............I would gain the weight back. And I wouldn't be able to blame Atkins for it.

Roxxy 01-16-2004 07:00 PM

I like guys with some muscle on them.:Graucho
Atkins is for wimps. :2 cents:

Mikey_219Inc 01-16-2004 07:49 PM

this fucking diet is tough, ive tried it UNINFORMED ... but then my brother did it right, read all the shit, its amazing the shit you can eat ... and after you lose the amount you want you can increase daily carbs and hopefully realize its important to get excercise. my bro lost serious fucking weight, and looks HAPPY again ;)

i think there should be some moderation in everything, but if you really inform yourself about the shit you can eat and do this right it does work, who gives a flying fuck if its not 100% healthy, what is? eating fatburgers every day? if you are smart about it instead of living off bacon then it seems fairly healthy and balanced to me.

id rather take a few years off my life and not be a sack of shit.

This thread is about diet. No one here is arguing that exercise (cardio) isn't highly beneficial.

Do you still subscribe to the FDA food pyramid? Even the most anti-Atkins nutritionists have been forced to rethink past ideas, and now conceed that simple carbs (white foods) are bad. Other popular diets (South Beach, Zone, Sugar Busters) are simply derivative of Atkins, and disguise themselves so people can pretend their not relly following Atkins.

The number one thing that reduces the risk of a variety diseases is weight loss. So, losing weight all by itself is better than staying fat but hitting the treadmill everyday. Reducing simple sugar intake has shown to greatly improve cholesterol levels, blood pressure, arterioscelorsis, C reactive protein (inflammation) and blood sugar levels(diabetics), in addition to excess weight.

BIG Movie List 01-16-2004 08:26 PM

buzzard 01-16-2004 08:57 PM

Mack describes it best and probably knows more about nutrition through eating right than the best government educated, fitness training guru on the planet.

If you don't like a diet based on low carbs it's because it busts your bubble.
