most rich people who claim to have their own jets are usually sharing them with other people, like a time share. Makes sense, split the cost with 3 or 4 other rich people at a quarter of the cost you'd have if you had one all to yourself.

partnerships are pretty common on all genaral aviation airplanes, not just jets. Most people would be surprised to find out how much it costs to maintain a small plane, even one like ours.
a couple of weeks ago our plane had the oil changed and the plugs re-gapped and cleaned. cost was just over 500$ just for that. the oil gets changed every 50 hours of flying.

Fuel for a jet is expensive so is the maint. the maint. on any plane is expensive tho.
But a jet is around 40 million $$ give or take depending on type and equipment. Burns around 40 gallons of fuel an hour. Your not going to lease one for very cheap.

Our little airplane was only $100,000 and only burns about 13 gallons of fuel and hour.

Your numbers are kinda off.
You can buy a Gulfstream for about 20 million and the fuel burn is more along the lines of 300 gallons an hour

venus 01-15-2004 04:44 PM

you can also buy a gulfstream for 48 million.
But as I said, depending on type and equipment and year.

you can buy an older citation for 2 million, but then there is a 10 million upgrade you can do on it which replaces the engines and some other stuff. fuel usage on these jets are in PPH and not GPH.

You know, there is some owner maintenace that you can do yourself, such as oil changes. Not sure if you can legaly clean and regap the plugs, but I know you can do the oil changes, I used to change mine mysef.

Aviation oil is expensive enough, not paying an aircraft mechanic's time to do a simple oil change.

why would you spend 48 million on a gulfstream? You can buy a 767 for that.

And yes I know how fuel burn is calculated, and the pounds per hour work out to 300 gallons.

true, one of the most expensive aviation oils (aeroshell 15/50 semi-synthetic) is only about 4.50/qrt, most single engine planes take 6-10 quarts.

and most guys i know clean their own plugs every 50 hrs or so.

aircraft ownership does not need to be overly expensive.

learn to fly and buy a plane. they're good investments.
