I think I need to take some action...

Against Fusker... Fusker is a tool to grab the images only off galleries, bypassing ads and everything. Ok, not new, but programs like these have been successfully fought off in the past. A quote from their site:

Quote:
"Enter the URL (web address) of a web page that has direct links to images. This works well with TGP pages ? those with many thumbnails linking directly to a large versions of the images. This method will only grab images linked directly from the page you indicate; it will not crawl the website looking for image links. b) Enter an address with a range of numbers in [brackets]. Please note that if the images are 01.jpg, 02.jpg, etc. you will need to include the appropriate number of 0's within brackets: ie. [01-16].jpg. You may fusker up to two ranges at once: ie. http://www.domain.com/Archive/5[4-6]-[1-10].gif. Please note that you will need to register and log in in order to run new fuskers."

So, they're harvesting pics off the people submitting to sites like mine. One www.fusker.com they tell people they no longer host the program (most likely 'cause that ran into problems with it), but they're giving away the PHP-code and list the people that use it on their site. How convenient.

A sample: this is what they make of a hosted gallery at teenmegacash.com: http://www.stoppablegolem.com/index.php?query=teenmega

Now why should I care? They're screwing the people listed on my site, which are the people that basically provide the content my visitors come to see. If I can lend a helping hand, please let me know, I have no problems at all playing around with their PHP in this matter. These people are stealing content, they must know they can't just get away with this.

Ok, now, what should I do? Get back at these fuckers? Or just let 'em go? Some people here are under the impression messing with these servers is always bad. Now I wonder if those people are also affected by these guys at fuskers.com. I'd say get these bastards... what do you guys think?

I don't think this is the only program doing this out there. They have been around for some time now and I don't think it is a big threat. But this is just my opinion ofcourse.

Rowan, good option, but not everybody knows how to do that, also, you need to know where the traffic is coming from.

On their site they claim to have 1 million visitors a day, I doubt that, but it could still be a threat. Programs like these are not unique, but they need to be stopped before they do start to cost us all money. Someone posted on their forum they should use a thumbnail preview 'though that would be hard bandwidth-wise'... What a looser! It's ok to steal other people's bandwidth, but hosting a thumbnail preview is too much?

I wonder what's the sense in eliminating banners and ads from the galleries.
People that don't like them, simply don't click on them.

polish_aristocrat: Hm... indeed... could be true. But some people don't know they're interested unless they see it. Now, I'm not talking about annoying popups, but a well placed banner could put someone to buying...

BTW, I found out about these people from a report I got in my e-mail:

Quote:
I was happy to get a gallery on your page jan 5

http://babestreet.lunarpages.com/nd/...3/indexcc.html

Unfortunatly some site called http://fusker.lewww.com/ linked to the gallery and exceeded my bandwith.

I wonder if it was really fusker or my traffic that made this guy exceed his bandwidth, but still...

Sites like this can do major damage to a bandwidth bill. It wouldn't surprise me. I got hotlinked from a message board once and burned 35 gigs over night. Imagine what a site like this could do if it got too big.. These people think they can get away with it .... but GFY usualy takes care of them

It's bad because surfers will loose the join possibility, unless they enter the url that shows on the pic, but affiliates won't make $$ and webmasters will lose $$ in bandwith.
This is not new, there are lots of software to leech entire sites looking for .jpg's, but this is worse because you have the link to all the pics online.
This is new but soon will be lots of free sites or 'bbs' using this.
Webmasters that see an excess in bandwith usage not matching the gallery hits, should implement something like some freehosts use, i mean you can't link directly to the .jpg.

I agree - But probably tgps would turn this idea down as 16 (or so) html pages is pretty inviting to gallery submitters who want to cheat.

when they submit to your site .. can't you check if they allow hotlinking or not by just img src='ing 1 of the pics? if they allow hotlinking make it be like "people may be stealling your bandwth blah lah blah send them to a step by step guide how to setup .htaccess.. most prolly just have to mail their host takes 2 secs to setup.. like everyone submits to your site.. so everyone would see it .. if they descide not to do it .. then it's their own money they are loosing.

Instead of doing something illegal yourself, you might want to put a link to a .htaccess tutorial on your submit page, and contact the host of people you find doing stuff like this.

The only real solution is that webmasters learn to protect themselves, since new sites that hotlink will always pop up again, no matter how many you manage to take down.

I got "fuskered" some time ago and I wrote them an email demanding they removed all my pics from their website....got an email back at the same day apologising for the inconvenience and never had any other problems with it.
But when they hotlinked my pics, my bw burned in a blink of an eye and I had to pay extra for my hosting service, so they need to be stopped.

sounds about like the smartest idea to me. If you have a robust .htaccess file, and list all of these bots and redirect them, then you are gravy.

Hun, one thing you could do is allow webmasters to email you new leechers, or have a submit form in your webmaster area ... and have a reqularly updated cut and paste .htaccess file including all the leeching programs and instructions on how to upload in ascii (for newbies) ...

Its sort of similar to how you inform your surfers about how to get rid of popups and viruses right on your index page, and im sure that some webmaster(s) would volunteer to help you make the initial list of leechers, if you dont already have the list that is.

Mikey, good idea, I'll think about that...

In the mean time: I got an e-mail from one of the leechers:

Quote:
Hi, I saw the post on your forums and I tried to register to post this, but then I noticed you'd emailed my host.

If you have any problems with your site being fuskered, you should have emailed me straight away. If you want me to remove any links just point them out to me and I'll remove them from the database, I can't control what galleries people fusker, it's a completely open system and I'm sorry if it's caused you any problems. If you want to completely block your site from being fuskered, simply put

{Limit GET}
order allow,deny
deny from 66.197.141.53
allow from all
{/Limit}

Into a htaccess, that'll just deny access from the stoppablegolem fusker. There are 2 other fuskers you might want to block too.

http://fusker.lewww.com = 66.98.180.43 http://www.babehunt.org/fusker = 66.37.19.215

In fact, I'm going to post these instructions to the main page later.

Hope that helps.

This is the reply I sent him:

Quote:
Problem is that people have to opt-out of your system. What you're doing is illegal, in effect, you're replacing webmaster's adds with your own, stealing these people's bandwidth. Webmasters in this whole industry will not like that I'm afraid...

In fact, how would you feel if we would drive up your bandwidth by loading your site as an image. Don't worry, you can mail each and every one of us asking to get taken off this img src, or you can add a piece of code on your site to blick every one individually... Does that sound fair? Opt-out is not an option for this. What you're doing is illegal and unethical business wise...

Now have Choker give those instructions to everyone in his system and see how fast the guy whoe sent you that kind email gets new IP's to avoid all the blocks.

Please comment on thumbgal.com. TheHun I note from screenshots is at the top of their list. Can you effectively block them with .htccess? The program loads on each individual PC that uses the program, thus a different IP...

Ok, another messages (I'm gone fishing after this ;-):

Quote:
I cannot control the content posted by members to fusker outside of normal moderation, I'm sorry you feel this way but threatening to attack fusker isn't going to solve anything, though I can understand your frustration, I've been fuskered myself But there are other, bigger fuskers than mine. You can easily add my fusker to your block list, but there's nothing further I can do - you're asking me to destroy fusker, and since my fusker is the smallest fusker it won't even do much good.

I'm not out to damage your traffic or your earnings, I can understand where you and the people on your forum are coming from, as I see it fusker is simply a tool being used by the members - it's no different to an ezcode. I'm not sure why people would feel the need to bypass your pages, it seems to me that fusker is a needless extra layer between user and content, but like I said - you stop fusker with one line of numbers, so please block my server's ip. There will never be a huge amount of fuskers, because the requirements are so high, you need not worry about that. My ads are temporary, and I'll be removing them soon, since they're stupid

I will remove your fuskered links if you tell me what they are.
My reply:

Quote:
Fusker is stealing our bandwidth. What do you suggest we do? Sit back and do nothing? The 34 Mbit of traffic burned on people's sites without one single impression on their banners? I don't seem to realise you're stealing from people. You can be assured there are people out there that won't rest till this program is stopped completely or till it is an opt-in system... And honestly, do you really think anybody would opt-in to get their content ripped?
I don't think they realise what they're doing with their program...
