:mad Fuck you Linksys

If they're going to make their products so you have to visit a website to set them up, then they should at least make sure the site is up all the time.

Can anyone else hit this address?

http://192.168.1.1/

I'm sure it will start working as soon as I go to bed, (or probably a few seconds after I post this.)

How is it my internal IP address if it says to log into that site on their support forum?

In case you haven't noticed, I know nothing about networking.

Just plug your modem into the WAN port, then your PC into one of the other ports. Just for giggles restart the router, modem and your PC (unless you know how to release/renew the IP). Then log in with "admin" and no password.

This is a board filled with geeks. We're all webmasters. It's not like this is a fucking cooking forum. We're all fairly computer literate here I would imagine. I'm just having fun, dipshit.

I'm sure it will start working as soon as I go to bed, (or probably a few seconds after I post this.)

192.168.1.1 is the adress of YOUR ROUTER. If the page comes up blank you have not properly set up the network.

Open your internet connection properties.
Set your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
Set your Ip to 192.168.1.101
Set default gateway to 192.168.1.1
Set your dns to your isp's dns numbers as normal.

If you have a dhcp based cable or dsl modem then release your ip.
Plug modem into router, plug router into pc all via network cables. No crossover cables needed.
Now turn on the router.

open browser and type in 192.168.1.1
Pass is admin
Tell it to dhcp renew.
Now configure router for static ip's on the 192.168.1.xxx block.

You now have internet access

I've restarted a few times now and even unplugged the power cable.

I'll try it again right now.

Since all the networking geeks are here to laugh at me, stick around for a few minutes, maybe you can help me get this working.

This is what is commonly known to previous tech-support people as an ID10T error.
The problem lies between the keyboard and the back of the chair.

READ THE FUCKING MANUAL.

There's a difference between making fun of someone and slapping someone upside the head who obviously hasn't read the instructions, followed them carefully, and then posts a flaming bashfest on the manufacturer as if it's their fault.

Here ya go... In order: (ASSUMING XP)

1. Plug your ethernet cable from your computer into your linksys on #1-4 ports (any of them is fine)
2. Plug IN your linksys router and your computer (power is good)
3. Start / Control Panel / Network Connections - right click on your LAN connection, click properties. Click TCP/IP, click properties. Make sure Obtain an IP Address automatically is set. Make sure Obtain DNS ... is set. Click OK.
4. Reboot if it doesnt work right away.

Report back if that fails to give you your linksys menu.

Just for the record, I don't even have highspeed access here, I've never used a cable modem or DSL in my life because I can't get it where I live, so I have no modem hooked into this router.

I just wanted to set this up so I can share files from my laptop to my other PC, plus I want to use the linksys wireless cams when I build my new house this year for a security system.

I got a kick out of your thread where you asked for someone to name ALL TGPs so you could submit to them. May I make fun of you here in case I forget to revisit that gem of a thread?

That works too, but the second he wants to play with port forwarding he'll wish he went static

You basicaly want to use it as a switch then. It should owrk right out of the box then and not even need to access any admin features.

My Linksys came with an install CD also. Main computer, secondary pc's....You have one of those? It sets properties for you.

So since I am not hooking this into cable or DSL, I guess it doesn't matter what I choose for "Internet Connection Type" on the setup page?

automatic config - DHCP
or
Static IP, etc.

Yeah you can go dhcp. But if you want to limit access to other computers/hardware on the netwok static makes it easier.

Sure. I'll turn it on right now.

314406940

And now that I have it working, will one of you smart people tell me the simplest way I can share my 56k modem connection that is on this computer with my laptop? I had it working before I upgraded the firmware but I really don't know how. (It's the blonde ass hairs showing through again.)

I want to be able to go take a dump while I make you all a "thank you" post on my laptop.

Blah blah blah, like I said, first time I have ever laid hands on a router, never used a cable modem before, so I had no idea about internal IP addresses and such. I am in 56k land for at least another year.
