sampling is nothing new. i'd say 80% of new songs you hear are derivatives or directly sampled from another song.
who cares. the neptunes don't sample much though. :2 cents: |
It doesn't make any difference to me - I like her and I like her songs (somewhat less I admit).

Do you have any idea of how much music is recycled these days? Sheeseh, gripe about something that has legs why don't ya!

Sampling sucks. Couldn't figure out why everyone loved that Emenim song until you realize you've had 20 plus years of hearing the melody from Aerosmith.
Cheating! Just to add to the stupidity: I recall an interview with the rap chick (I'm not recalling her name) who sang with Sting on an awards show. It's the song about Biggie Smalls that sampled "Every breath you take" Sting showed up to sing with her and she told the press she didn't know who he was. She thought he was some hired singer. She didn't know he wrote the song. I'd love to see someone like BigWillie Style come up with a new hit that didn't involve someone elses intellectual property. And Fanilla Ice totally stole that piece. It wasn't sampled. It was copied. There's like one note difference. |

I don't see why anyone would have a problem with her sampling unless she has stated that she never sampled which I doubt she has .
|
yeh sampling is no crime... I don't like her music anywayz
|
There is a lot of original music out there.
Its just not being force fed to you like all this crap. you actually have to look for it. I have news for you, wether you listen to Justin Timberlake or Eminem or Alicia Keys, you are listening to the same music: Commercial Pop. |

And btw Alicia Keys rocks :thumbsup |

yeah its called a sample
examples Bowie & Jagger - Under Pressure Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby AeroSmith - Dream On Eminem - Sing For The Moment etc |
there are very few artists in any genre in this day and age that actually come up with their own lyrics. if they are not sampling music then the music is being written by an someone else. for example tony estes graduated from my h.s. a few years before i was there and she is RICH now by writing songs for artists, the most famous being whitney houston. tony's album is ok but she is making a killing off of writing lyrics for "superstars." nothing new.

same shit on fast forward

Thats why music sharing is so big because people dont want to pay $20 for crap but the problem is music has become a visual medium. Which it was never intended to be. I watch with my wife, a cable channel that vh1 has and its all music from the 60's to 80's. Since there where no music videos in the 70's alot of it is live performances, the muscianship was so much higher but now a days most of them would never get a record deal.Ugly mother fuckers making great music. lol We watched BTO they kicked ass but today 4 fat guys with beards who look like truck drivers would never get a record deal.
Also once apon a time it was called stealing not sampling, George Harrison got sued and lost because My Sweet Lord sounded to close to "He's So fine". As far as Black music the days of Stevie Wonder and Prince are over lol , hiphop and rap killed musicianship, I would say the only current black group who might turn that around is Outkast. |
well, if you played a musical instrument (such as piano) and you watch her at a steinway, you will know she is not a fraud.
although her voice is not that remarkable, her musical ability is. same with mariah carey, if you read music just take a look at some of the charts she writes. or indie arie. or jewel. lots of pretty faces out there, but some of them do actually have talent, whether you like what they do or not. compare these gals with the "manufactured" talent of britney spears and madonna, and there is no comparison. the general populace cannot spot real talent, real talent stands the test of time. like carole king, or paul simon, or james taylor, or david sandborn, or chic corea, etc. |
Artists take riffs and melodies from other songs they like. Rock artists do it just as much as R&B folks do. Rappers do it more than anyone else obviously but that's what the music has always been based on. Rap was created from people rapping over other artists songs at parties so we can't be too surprised at what it is now.
If you want to believe in Alicia Keys again I suggest you listen to the tracks after "You Don't Know My Name." She totally produced and wrote both "If I Can't Have You" and "Diary" (which is the next single). The only other R&B artist that produces as much as Alicia is Tweet so you have to give her some cradit since there's so few artists that can do that. She didn't produce You Don't Know My Name so don't blame her for that. Just FYI, very few rock and Jazz artists produce their own songs as well. Even Norah Jones, for as many grammies as she won, didn't really produce her own songs.:2 cents: |

Alicia Keys thrilled an invited audience in London last night as she debuted material from her forthcoming second album, 'The Diary Of Alicia Keys'.
The 21-year-old singer/songwriter, who won five Grammies for her debut 'Songs In A Minor', unveiled tracks including 'Streets Of New York', 'Diary' and the sublime classic soul of new single 'You Don't Know My Name', which earned her a standing ovation. Produced by frequent Jay-Z collaborator Kanye West, the track samples the Main Ingredient track 'Let Me Prove My Love To You' and brings a lush 'What's Goin' On' era Motown feel to contemporary R&B. happy!!!!........................................ |

exactly right. but the mark of a true artist is the ability to take something and make it their own. just listen to norah jones by herself with just her voice and her playing a single piano knock out hoagy charmichael's "the nearness of you"---gives ya' fuckin goosebumps if you know music. or bette midler's version of the ballad "as time goes by" or diana krall doing the joni mitchell tune "a case of you" at her piano. or natalie cole doing any number of her dad's ballads a capella. some artists are the real thing. and 85% of so-called artists are manufactured by handlers, who need dancers and colored lights, and fireworks and 10 backup singers to do a presentation. |
Talk about a blind subject
I was waiting on you to say she really didn't know how to play the piano or sing, lol |

Jay-Z is the king of 'sampling'
He has yet to make a track from nothing. |
