keywords and marketing (adwords)

how related does a keyword have to be to sell a product? I've been playing around with adwords a lot and sometimes my bright ideas just don't seem to pan out...or is this an adwords thing?

Not sure what you mean but I imagine you would want to bid on keywords that are somewhat relevant to what you're selling. Primarily to get the ctr ratio and secondly to not spend money on something that won't sell. Tell me more detail of what you mean and I'll try to help you out.

It's just a waste of money if your site appears for keywords which haven't much to do with it.

On the other hand, it's questionable whether you get hits at all if you use too specific keywords.

Just try it

Do you really think people looking for css/html are looking for web hosting? You're not an ebay, don't bid on every keyword remotely related to webhosting, it will just be losing away your money (my opinion at least). Target smaller niches like "virtual web hosting" or more refined keywords but still related to web hosting.

here's a tip

host the front page or the tour and keep ur first page clean. after the first click, add an exit pop to the tour or whatever.

keep that click as long as possible.

if you're paying per click, keep those words as targeted as possible. it's not just an adwords thing - if a guy is looking for an oral sex site, he isn't as likely to buy another niche. after all, if you give him exactly what he wants, he's most likely to buy.

right...this is my learning experience on adwords. So I thought think outside the box and where are the consumers for hosting...designers and programmers. So what are they searching for? html and css...that's was my plan...

Well, I've given up on web hosting for now, but it is the idea I am wondering about...can you sell web hosting to a programmer by targeting "php" etc, or is it too broad? And take this idea into other campaigns.

You have to be really specific... brainstorm every variation of "web hosting" you can think of, and make a custom ad and landing page for each one (php can be a big help here).

thanks Rorschach, but what I'm thinking is can you be related too? who is going to buy something....get them there.

or...are searchers so focused that you need to catch them at the "how do I buy x" point?

It will get expensive fast if you're not totally targetted, the "related" angle works for some traffic but not really for Adwords (unless you're getting really cheap clicks).

Bear in mind the nature of SE traffic and buyer behaviour - normally when you type something into a search box, you're looking for that specific thing, and you just get pissed off when you come over obstructions or distractions.

So the theory that if someone wants to buy a hat and I try to sell them a coat is not going to work in the search engine world?

I guess I can understand and true, I get pissed off when people tried to sell me something I'm not looking for.

Probably the time to sell them the coat is after they bought the hat.

Well, for myself I block out so much stuff...banners and ads, etc. Never really even see them. I don't hardly use search engines to find things except if I don't know a better way to find it.

So yes, I guess if I wanted say to find a certain hat and had to use a search engine, I would be sorting through all the information just for that.
