Going Back To School

Any of you people that have been in college once for a few years, and have now been out for like 8 years (like me) thinking about going back?

Maybe its the new year, a surge of motivation, whatever, but lately I am finding myself craving going back to school. For whatever reasons, but just wanted to see if any other 27+ year olds are feeling the same way.

Im gonna be 28 in 6 months and am really considering jumping back in school in addition to maintaining what I am doing etc... I can only see positive and good things about this decision, yet somehow I find myself holding on to not having to get up at a certain time, or be anywhere at a certain time for that matter. Almost as if I am holding on to the lazy life of working from home.

Anyone else?

I really think by the end of this year I will be back in college.

Few thing to think about. People who go back to college at an older age tend to take it more serious and do better acidemically.

The other thing think about is, college coeds!! Mmmmm That is one thing I miss about college, the abudence of young, attractive females going to class in cut-off shorts and halter tops in the spring.

I say definately go back....

If I could, I would!!

I went to college for one year and realised it wasn't for me. I don't like to constantly study, I prefer to have fun.

I do wanna go back but only to a night class. I want to learn Car Mechanics, I love messing around with my car. I won't do it as a living tho, just a hobby!

I went to the University of New Orleans, and still party as hard as I did there. Kegs? blah, i nevetr liked that flat ass beer hehehe ;)

I dont miss partying, hell my head just stopped hurting from New Years last night heheh

I am starting to think of things I did not finish in my life, things I may want to learn, thngs id love to study, i probably read more than most of you look at porn, i am literally craving more knowledge, input, the study of things, and there is a big difference between what I am craving and missing 'college life.' ;)

Sounds like you should definitely go back
Only thing to watch out for is getting the right university and the right field of studies. Some involve lots of discussion, exploration, etc, while others basically come down to pounding useless facts into your head.

This is what I am feeling as well. I was thumbiong through courses for the hell of it, and I saw courses that I would LOVE to take and study. As mentioned, I read a bunch, more than your normal person, If i am not on my machine or playing with gear, I am glued to a book, not novels but books on things, and I am begining to think its because of my natural desire to study and be into learning things about ther world, cultures, art, society, mankind, philosophy, whatever the topic... and I would treat this with a more adult attitude I guess, much more than I had when I was at UNO hahaha

Do it man! I'm currently supporting myself and my wife, while putting her through school. Once she graduates (3+ more years), I'm going to go back to school. I did was wasted money at a shitty business college a few years back, got me my current job though. so I guess I can't complain.

I'm 28 and am going back this summer. It feels strange but if you look around the campus there are a lot of people our age running around. I'm sure not all of them are professors. What are you thinking of going for?

I started college again two years ago after being out of school for 2 years. I already had an English degree, but wanted to do something else.

Go figure, now I'm putting the English degree to work. Heh.

To be honest, the reason I didnt grad the first time is because I have never gone to college for a degree or any trade.

I took classes blindly for like 3 years hahah

But now, I have found myself obsessed with the history of man, politics, philosophy, same old same old, no plan just the craving of knowledge on subjects, and even the debates and discussions of them.

I used to love arguing about shit in class with other people, and somehow I think the reason some of us post on message boards is becayuse of that same desire, yet we do it from home and instead of an academic atmosphere.

I even miss literature classes heheh

in at least half of my classes over the past 2 years i've had people well over 23. it's not that big of a deal to be 25+ and attending classes. i'm still loving the college life because every year there are plenty of people to meet. good luck

Hey Fletch, I'm pretty much in the same boat. Did 3 years at UC Santa Cruz & dropped about 10 years ago. I do agree very much with what Mike said about one's attitude being different when you return to school later in life - you're there because you want to be there as opposed to doing it just because you're "supposed to" or whatever.

I've been doing my homework (pun intended) on returning for a while now and have found some interesting stuff. The nearest university is an hour + away on a good day, so that's really not an option. What I found is that there are some "real" universities that have jumped on the distance learning wagon in a big way.

Washington State seems to have the most offerings in terms of degrees and classes offered. Likewise, even some pretty prestigious schools like Duke, DePaul and St Mary's (in Moraga) offer degrees which are 90-100% offsite coursework.

I think you're going back for all the wrong reasons. You can "read" about "the history of man" for FREE by searching credible .edu sites or visiting your local library. that just leaves debate & discussion. So you're willing to pay high tuition, parking fees and also take graded mid-terms just to debate with other "students"?

Yeah thats the reason I want to go, to debate with other people. (sarcasm)

Come on people think past the bend.

I have been supporting myself (since 19) and working from home for over 4 years now. I feel like taking some classes, theres no 'wrong reasons.'

Yep, I went back to school in 2003 after 5 years away. I'm only about 20 credits away from a degree so I thought I'd just finish it up. I am still working full time too so it's a bit of a bitch getting up all early and what not. I felt it was something I should just get out of the way while I'm young enough to hang with the freakish hours. School can be fun plus that's where all the hotties are.

Absolutely. Back in 97 when I injured my back at work, I looked around for some sort of courses or retraining etc, because I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to continue working a physically stressful job at the hospital..... and I was right. I found a course that taught basic computing skills as well as other useful employment skills and I found I really enjoyed it. One of the best decisions I ever made was to go back to school, and frankly I wouldn't be here today if not for that course. I was 34 at the time.

I've been thinking lately of taking some more courses, not sure what in though. Back in high school I wasn't the greatest student, didn't have the focus.... but back in that course 5-6 years ago I found I really enjoyed the work and the studying for some reason.

I have my degree in CS, but have thought of going back for nursing, just because it is not the sort of job that can be offshored. If you are going back for something medical, I think it's worth it, but if you are going back for a major in liberal arts or even business, I'd really reconsider because those degrees are a dime a dozen.

If I were a kid starting fresh, I'd go for pharmacy, because the starting salary is just totally insane (well over 50k a year).

I'll be 28 in February and I've been thinking about going back to school for a long time. I'd love to go, but I think I need to wait until my kids get a little older.

im not going for any degree to get a job.

in my eyes all degrees are wothless since i wont be using it to pay my bills.

i just feel like taking some classes, this isnt a career move.

i make more than 50k without a degree hahaha

Hey, I'm going back to school too starting full-time this semester. I'm 25 but I look extremely young for my age, everyone I meet thinks that I'm a 18 yr old freshman just starting in school.

I haven't been back to school for 6 yrs, mainly because I left home when I was 18 and had to work full-time to support myself and it was too hard for me to work and go to school at the same time.

For some reason I feel that I'm a lot more "smarter" than when I was younger, I feel like I absorb information easier and 100% attentive in class, when I was in high school I used to always fall asleep in class and my mind used to drift off to la-la land...

I took a class last semester just to get back in the swing of things and I got an A+! And it's also fun to get hit on by tons of young 18 yr old boys, it's good for my self esteem!! Plus it adds structure to my life, gives me a reason to wake up a certain time, and that makes me organize my time and plan my schedule better.
