                                      When they sell enough domains, or through political legislation, it is believed ICANN will be forced to add New.net domains to the main internet root system, alongside dot-com, dot-net and dot-org, giving added stability to xxx websites.

                                                              i've been hearing this scenario for years. So far it's just a way for few to cash money from a non-existing web property. ICANN come up with .xxx and knock out the existing sold domains. Nobody limits them

Nobody is saying it will repace dot com the new extensions are now more readily available if more people catch on to the extension it wont leave you feeling yours are worth 2c.

Most are gone now. Robin's TLDNS, mentioned above, was one of the more widely installed in maybe early 2000, but a few months after starting TLDNS, he retired from the industry to persue his dream of opening a nursing home with his wife, or something like that. The thousands (hundreds of thousands?) of people who had switched their DNS settings to TLDNS suddenly couldn't reach anything on the Internet, and no doubt placed thousands of calls to their ISPs trying to set things right again. Similar fates have befallen most other sellers and users of ICANN-unauthorized extensions.
