athlon xp processors... any good?

looking at laptops..
the athlon xp's are generally much cheaper than comperably equipped P4 systems...

how do they compare?

hyperthreading and the 800mhz fsb can be a slight advantage, depending on what you're using.

i've used amd for my primary system for years, no problems and they're plenty fast (generally faster than intel at a lower clock).

I'm not into laptops, but I've got an Athlon running my pc. I love it, no problems, nice and quick. I give Athlon a big and Intel a big any day of the week.

if you want to slap together a fairly decent machine on the cheap, you can get a barton 2500+ for about $80. they're sufficiently fast for most projects you want to work on, and they have more 'snap' from the large cache.

agreed, just make sure you get a good fan AMD they tend to heat up more than intel!

I was an intel only guy for years but this year I got myself an xp2800 and am quite impressed.

Incidentally, on the heat side amd are designed to run to 90deg C whereas intel are designed to run to 70deg C.

I just built a new PC and used the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ with the Barton Core with 512 L2 Cache. Fast as hell and a bargain price.

All the info about AMD CPU's is here:

Im all for athlon, been a AMD person for quite some time now. The cheap 2500 bartons are good for most people. But if you are a system tweaker and like overclocking you can still find some early week unlocked 2500+ barton chips for $130-$230 and push em to 3200+ with ease.

they do get hot, but the newer xp chips run a little cooler than the previous socket a athlons. i'm running a 2400+ @ 2332, runs in the low to mid 40's with a copper zalman flower. it will run at a little over 2400, but occasionally gets a little unstable due to heat.
