So I am working away .. I get a blocked call .. answer it ... it is some guy claiming to be a friend from 20 yrs ago's father .. and he has to talk to me .. " I won't waste your time" was his last words before we hung up ..

I wait the 30+ min for him to make it out to my place .. he come to the door . I vaguely remember him .. just barely ...

We go inside and sit down to talk .. he almost immediately tells me he has cancer and is not doing the best .. the 20-30 min conversation goes through the whole scenario where he has cancer .. spent his and his families last penny on treatment and needs to borrow $3500 from me till he gets his mothers estate settled in the next few months .. then he can pay me back ..

err .. it was exactly like the emails you get .. accept this was in my fricken office .. WTF .. what if he is telling the truth .. ?? I asked him to have his son who I remember more to call me .. so I can verify .. my gut is saying ..scam .. but i do kind of remember him ..

what are your thoughts ..

Yikes.. Keep your money you made it... Take care of yourself, if you have a bad feeling it is probably a bad feeling.. And that's why you never answer blocked calls too lol..

I don't understand why he would pick you of all people after 20 years? My gut is sort of telling me that he has already gone through everyone else.

If you really wanted to help this guy you COULD go thru the effort of verifying all of the details and see if he really will be able to pay you back. Or you could just simply tell him because of the economy you don't have it handy.

You should not feel guilty or anyway obliged to help this person. He can get $5k off a credit card if he's that desperate and will be getting money in a few months anyways.

Yup. I had a friend go awol back in 92 didnt hear anything from him until he showed up at my place looking for money 2 years ago and saying pretty much the exact same thing. "I'm very sick, I need money, i'm good for it" not, how's your mom been? or what have you been up to for the past decade? it was all about money.

Took 1 phone call to find out he's so fucking strung out on crack he deceided to start hitting up all his old friends he abandoned years ago.

I agree 100% Even if the guys not on drugs, its not you responsibility to take care of his mess. Saying no can be a bitch, but you gotta do it. People like that are like stray animals you see running down the road. Feed them, and they'll be back everytime they get hungry.
