Sony Handycam ... Anyone have one?

Been playing around with mine, cant figure out how to get the video from tape, onto my PC.

USB is connected, and i can VIEW the movie, but when i shut the camcorder, it isnt on the PC.

The manual isnt helping whatsoever.

Anyone? Thanks.

I shoot with the TRV19. The problem is that you're using the USB, which is only for streaming on these cameras. That basically means you can use the USB as a webcam and nothing else. Firewire is what you need to be using, my friend.

next to the usb port there should be a port that says DV thats where you plug the fire wire in, set the camcorder to vcr. turn on the capture utility on your computer and hit the play button on the camcorder.

The camera has two connections, one being USB, the other being Firewire. The camera does not come with a Firewire cable, and you will need to make sure your computer has a Firewire card to be able to transfer video to your machine.

Look up IEEE 1394 on Google and find a pic of the port, and you can figure out which is which on your machine.

prepare for a stupid question lol

"MINI DV CAMCORDER" stands for digital video? And means i have that DV port?

Does this mean the cheaper models havent got it, and its harder to transfer the video?

thanks

Sony MiniDV - stands for the tapes used.

There are several tape standards, from which the MiniDV tapes are practically the best.

As for the camcorder itself, sony has the following models:

Sony DCR 12E - no remote control

Sony DCR 14E - remote but no Firewire Input (only output, you cant transfer video back to the camera)

Sony DCR 19E - has remote, has firewire in/out

Sony DCR 22E - has everything + a few more special effects

Sony DCR 33E - has everything + a few more special effects

Mechanically the are the same, Carl Zeiss lens, great night shots, great picture quality, low noise from the motor. You made a wise choise with your camera. I recently (2 weeks ago) bought Sony DCR - TRV 19E which is $200 or $300 cheaper than your model. I love the quality.

Btw forget about transferring the video to the PC if you haven't got a fast PC (2 GHz processor, 512 mb ram and SCSI hard drive for editing and 200GB ide for storage) - because 1 hour of video takes 13 GB of space. You'll have to encode your videos to the divX (mpeg 2) format in order to store them. And encoding takes 3-5 hours on a fast pc (per 1 hour of video).

Make sure you get a better battery. The stock battery you have lasts 1 hour max. There are batteries ($200) that last 10-13 hours.

Another tip, stick to one brand of tapes. I prefer Sony MiniDV (premium) - around $5.

Currently I am not transferring the videos to the pc, I just keep them on tapes.

Have fun ;)

well i have 200gig hdd, but only about half is free.

i dont need to save the movies on here, i just wanna edit a bit, maybe grab some stills, then burn to a movie cd

As for the time to convert, it wont bother me as long as its a hands-free process. I can easily let it run while i go do other stuff, i just dont wanna have to be here to hit buttons or anything.

can that be done?

thanks/

transfer the video using firewire cable

edit it (fast pc)

encode it to divX - no buttons pushing necessary except start, it only needs CPU time, very simple process

if u dont have alot of drive space make sure your video software has real time encoding to mpeg (use svcd setting).
i know videostudio has it and i believe pinnacle now has it.

also remember to split the movie as you can only fit about 40 minutes on a cd-r

it has firewire & USB 2.0, i edit all my movies on my computer. I have a sony laptop so it came with a bunch of free video editing programs. the cool thing about the cam is it works as a digital pic cam too, with a built in SD card slot for pics

is there something i can do with my RCA jacks?

my buddy told me he has a dvd burner for his house, and he can play a vhs on the tv and record it onto a dvd. This sounds like what i will be doing.

much easier than all this shit on the pc with encoding and whatnot.

90% of the burns will be for storage, and the occasional clip i wanna edit, i can rip from dvd and encode on my pc.

sounds good? or am i missing something as usual lol

your making this way harder than it is.

once you get the video transferred you can edit it on your computer.
buy ulead videostudio 7.
http://www.ulead.com/vs/runme.htm
once you edit it.. then you can burn it to disc

my buddy told me he has a dvd burner for his house, and he can play a vhs on the tv and record it onto a dvd. This sounds like what i will be doing.

much easier than all this shit on the pc with encoding and whatnot.

90% of the burns will be for storage, and the occasional clip i wanna edit, i can rip from dvd and encode on my pc.

sounds good? or am i missing something as usual lol
there is a S-video out so you can get a s-video -> rca cable. i love the cam, does everything i want it to do and more

i got a 256 chip, figured while i figure out what i wanna do atleast i can take small clips and get them onto the pc.

Only thing is, while recording it doesnt say how long i can record for.

Does anyone have any idea how much video i can fit onto a 256mb chip?

thanks.

are we still on this thread?

dude.. just fuck with the camcorder and see what u can do.

things to do when editing on a lower speed system

make sure dma or ultra dma is turned on in your HD settings
make sure you turn off the clock in your windows toolbar
reduce your resolution to 800 x 600 and color to 16 bit (it doesnt affect the video at all, just reduces memory load)
the dma settings will help you from dropping frames

Thats a pc problem. If you want to do video in a real way there is only one way to do it.

Anything video and a pc equals a waste of time.

Dont listen to this guy. Even with a simple firewire card and MS movie maker you can do more than enough.
If you are really serious and need tons of video you will need a special card which are quite expensive but buying an Apple because of video editing is as stupid as that guys post.

Hey, lil2

Are you using that program Pixela, which comes with the camera, to capture via USB port?
If so, you may be having troubles to find the stored files; try checking this directory on your machine: C:\Program Files\PIXELA\ImageMixer\Capture (the file names are Cap0001, Cap0002, etc).
