KARBALA, Iraq (AP) - Rebels unleashed a coordinated assault on military bases and the governor's office in the southern city of Karbala on Saturday, killing 13 people - including six soldiers from the U.S.-led occupation force and six Iraqi police officers - and wounding at least 172, officials said.

Four of the dead soldiers were from Bulgaria and two from Thailand. An Iraqi civilian also was killed.

Attackers detonated four suicide car bombs and fired mortar shells and grenades, wounding at least 37 other coalition soldiers, including five Americans and 19 Bulgarians, U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said in Baghdad.

Some 135 Iraqi civilians and police officers also were wounded, said Ali al-Arzawi, deputy director of Karbala General Hospital.

In other attacks Saturday, rebels detonated three homemade bombs that set aflame a fuel depot and injured six American soldiers.

Still, military officials said the number of attacks had decreased significantly. Kimmitt said attacks went down from about 50 a day in mid-September to an average of about 15 a day, spiking to 18 on Christmas Day.

Well now Al Queda, the Sunni and other insurgents have to prove that the capture of Saddam was futility for the US and step up the attacks.. if not they lose face, and to a muslim, that's everything.

Honestly, it isn't. Vietnam was a carnage , a real war. This is a guerilla situation. In most cases ( re: South America), the occupier looses.

Yes but we will one day pull out and call it a "victory" of some sorts. It's kind of hard to really win when the whole country is launching attacks against you daily. What would you "win" anyhow?

Yeah, you're right. I was aiming more towards the guerilla aspects of it. We run around with big flags that say "shoot here" while those fuckers are firing rockets from donkeys LOL. Overall the carnage isn't comparable of course.

In some instances...yes. The US has captured Al Qaeda members.

Do you know of people that thought invading Iraq for no reason was a smart idea? I don't...but I do know people that thought invading Iraq for multiple solid reasons...was a smart idea...and still think so...just as does the majority of the American population.

Vietnam was gorilla war fare of sorts ie. wait for dumb American to fall asleep, bomb him then run off very quickly.

What is happening in Iraq will continue for years to come which is all the better for the Bush administation as they can keep handing out Irag rebuilding contracts and they can keep the policital fund raising at the max!
