Life never ceases to amaze me. Every single fucking day you can learn something new. Take today, for instance. How could I have known?

See, I always though that the Star Trek nerds aka Trekkies were the crowned fucktard princes of the sci fi/fantasy uberloser community. Man, was I off base. Turns out the Lord of the Rings (LOTR) fanatics are both more numerous and less grounded in reality than the Trekkies. There are so damn many more of them, and all this time I had no idea. I guess they're just not as in-your-face about it as the Kirk kooks. I mean the Trekkies -- they have conventions -- several per year. They dress up in costumes on a regular basis. They make jokes that only people who studied the credits of each Star Trek episode would get. No, they make jokes about the people who study the credits of every episode but don't get the joke they should have gotten by virtue of having studied the credits of every episode. Yes. It is that bad.

But these LOTRers, they take the cake and then some. Whereas Trekkies memorize all the dialogue in an episode, these fools memorize whole chapters of the book. One chick recited the excerpt describing the whole demographics of the fucking brotherhood of the ring. Oops, my bad -- fellowship of the ring. She said something about "9 they were, one from here, one from there, blah fucking blah blah." (Probably not 9, but I was so enthralled by the fact that she memorized that shit that the specifics eluded me.) The Empress of Geekdom, I tell you.

After I saw the second installment of that cinematic abomination, suddenly 3/4 of the screennames I've seen on the internet made sense: "arwenstar," for instance. I thought maybe that was like some astronomy thing.

You know, it's one thing to be able to recite Shakespeare from memory. "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow..." because he wrote with style which just lends itself to being stored by the brain. His puns, his quips, they all just flow off the page into the mind. But I don't give much of a damn about two midgets who hug an awful lot for heterosexuals and run around in circles in the mountains. Do you have any idea how hard it is to go in a circle by accident when you're in the mountains? Trust me, it's mostly impossible, and you'd better have a good excuse, like there's a blizzard or something.

Anyway, basements everywhere are emptying for the first time in a year which can only mean one thing: Return of the King is out.

I read the Hobbit, but I just couldn't get into the LOTR trilogy -- I was bored silly after like 10 pages. Give me a good Orson Scott Card Sci Fi novel.

You think its only "geeks" who love LOTR? For one, this series of books has already stood the test of time and will continue to do so.

Now as for the movies, it appears as though ROTK will be the second highest grossing movie of ALL TIME behind Titanic, especially with the phenomenal word of mouth behind it.

Ahem, this begs the question............is everyone a geek who sees it and loves it, especially being one of the most popular movies of all time?

This "geek business" is a myth, cause then most of America would be considered "geeks."

LOL, my girlfriend took me to a lawyer's symposium in Palo Alto last year so she can hob nob with the biggest gimps.. i mean partners... in those law firms. I walked away with the same feeling as you, Buff. Although they weren't talking about dragons, orcs, wyrm riders, or elves, they exhibited the same "lost in their little world" oblivion to the larger world in general. About 80% of what I heard either involved Res Judicata, Res Ipso Loquitur, Collateral Estoppel, Laches, etc etc generously sprinkled with discussions about multimillion dollar settlements and "sympathetic" plaintiffs. Sure, these guys and gals were drinking high end Zinfandels and could tell the difference between Camembert brands, but there was really nothing that separated them from the Nerds of The Rings you discussed below except maybe the fact that most of these guys averaged $400K a year in income. Still the same "closed in" nerdy attitude.

Sorry Buff, you are DEAD WRONG. To be one of the most successful movies of all time, like ROTK will be and Titanic is, you need the quadrant demographic........appeal to men and women, young and old........

Studio execs say and preach if you have only 3 of the 4, you still won't have one of the biggest movies.

Just watch, ROTK will have legs......its already doing staggering numbers and this is a winter release of all things, not a summer one like Spiderman. Families are going to this one for xmas, so are all families geeks?

And saying Titanic was seen mostly by teenage girls is silly. Sure, alot of them saw it and more than once, but the goddam movie did over $600 billion domestically and almost 2 billion worldwide.

You need to get real, sit back, and enjoy your so called and labelled "geek movies" which are MAINSTREAM movies.

Talk is cheap and if a movie puts up the big bux, according to studio heads who live and die with the movies, its MAINSTREAM, like it or not.

Anyways, I respect your opinion but I believe these things are mainstream. The same was said about Star Wars when it was released originally.

Now its a part of our cultural fabric, just as LOTR is moving this way thanks to the movie trilogy which exposes the majority of our culture to these gems.

Question for you: whats your favorite movie of all time? I'd be interested to hear your opinion.

so basically what you guys are saying is that if someone is into something and passionate about it. That makes them a geek. What about the Athlete that lives and dies for his sport? What about the guys that never leave GFY? What about the business man that gives all his attention to his work?

This is all about a passion for something specific. At least they know who they are and are not afriad to show it.

Eric, its not the passion for something that makes a person a geek. It's the obliviousness to everything else in the world. It is the false assumption that just because a subject matter consumes their whole life that the whole world will also do likewise. Hence, my Palo Alto story above.
