exactly. Talk to your network techs before you blame Windows :Graucho

Give the guy a break folks. This shit happens to the best of us. A fresh install firewalled or not can still get infected before updating and patching the thing. I have sat behind hardware + software firewalling on a fresh install and still got infected within 2 minutes of turning on the modem. It sucks that it happens which is why I now keep critical patches stored on cd and just install them before hooking up to the net.

ah fuck it, too many grumpy people on GFY today, get the fuck back to work people!

that is some scary shit that the firewall did not help you out

Personally I build my own machines, but I do setup and tech alot of other peoples PC's.

Whenever I'm wiping a drive and reinstalling the OS, the first thing I do upon the completion of the installation is to install the antivirus...Then connect it to the net and download the new VDF's.

That would have prevented you from having your issue Hooper.

Also, when it comes to anyone I know buying proprietary machines (Dell, Gateway, Sony, Alienware...whatever), the very first thing on my agenda is to nuke the drive, make them go get a real copy of their OS (Not the proprietary advertising mess of an OS that they always send out) and install that...Then install the AV, connect to the net, update VDF's...THEN do windows updates and install proper drivers for anything.

The only times I have ever seen anyone having an issue after the latter was completed was due to user idiocy.

:winkwink:

Ditto. However, I will say that the WinXP Pro disk that came with my Dell 8200 had Dell's logo on the label, but the disk itself was pure Microsoft, devoid of Dell-related crap. Nice! I remember when machines (especially HPs) had their personalized OSs with tons of garbage on the OS disk that installed by default. It seems they don't do that now (probably a Microsoft licensing issue).
There is a separate Dell disk for reinstalling Dell-related software... I just skip it! :)

So this is why they stopped supporting windows 98!

When a part malfunctions, you need to ship them your laptop for like a week or two. I can't afford to do that, I'm better off buying a new PC than waiting that long. Dell's onsite service is definitely what keeps me with PC's.

Dell's support is very good. I've had only good experiences with them, just call them with model #'s and serial #'s and they will hook you up.

I installed XP Pro the other day on one of my boxes and it was fucking awful, I forced myself to stick it out and get it all set up and updated... and it sucks horribly.
