Internet Taxes

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...6&sid=96168964

I am suprised it is taking so long for the US government to put something together for taxing on the internet. They could be making billions of extra dollars and stores like Walmart and Chapters are losing money hand over fist when people shop online versus coming into their store.

If memberships started getting taxed by states who do you think this would be passed on to? Would paysites reduce their memberships to cover the cost for consumer?

I wouldnt cover the cost the customer would pay it and that way they can convey their thanks on election day. Also it would a collection nightmare to collect all those taxes for different cities and states across America. Its almost impossible to be done. Heres a question we dont sell the memberships our third party processors do in theory so wouldnt be their responsiblity to collect and process the sales tax. I dont even know the state my members are from.

Could be a competitive advantage to companies who are willing to knock down their price a few bucks to cover the tax for their members.

Good luck getting ibill/ccbill etc to change their entire system to start charging taxes for different states.

They should stay away from this, the state can only make this business tougher.

retail taxes are on products not services so it would not apply to a paysite membership

all i have to say is Fuck the US (i'm an american). the US does not own the internet yet we act like we do. how dare they try to tax something that is free... don't we already pay enough taxes. this country is so greedy, tax the people really high then 2yrs later cut a tiny precent making it look like they're doing something good.

The tax laws for any country are sucking at all. There is no common way how to handle this. We in Germany, have to get tax of any amount which was billed at the net. Even you are not from the EU we have to charge the tax for it.

But the best is, usually if you sell photo licences you have to bill 7% tax, but because we are selling online we have to charge 16%

Don't know the US laws but in Sweden we have to charge VAT on services and products we sell over the internet too... It's just like selling it in a store.

Yeah Honey... Ohio charges taxes on some services... and that actually can go clear down to county and local tax rates as well. They would have to come up with some SET number countrywide before taxes could EVER be collected online.

Like our city or country (not sure which it was) just added an emergency sales tax of 1 cent... how many things like that happen all over this country every month? What a nightmare that would be!!

Unfortunately, we need to pay taxes. It sucks now but it would suck even worse if he had to forego things/lifestyle that taxes brings about. Examples: roads, highways, police, health care for the poor, etc etc

I agree with reynold, paying takes sucks, but IF it goes to good programs then I have no issue with it.

Knowing the US though, they would spend every cent of porn taxes on their war machine.

sales tax is nothing new. people know they have to pay it when they go into any store. i think we should feel lucky that we got away without paying it online for so long.
as for taxing internet services, i don't see how they can make that swing.

Site memberships are closer to being a product then a service. Downloading movies would be a product, where as live cam sites I think would be a service. hmm, they could go either way becuase there is no difference between downloading a two hour video of some chick taking it in the ass and buying The Gladiator online, it is just a movie, and you would be taxed for The Gladiator so why not for the site membership.
