Looking to buy a digital camera - any advice?

Just need something decent, don't want to spend much more than $400. I mainly want something for snapshots, although having respectable zoom capabilities would be nice, since I'd like to be able to get close ups of bugs and other small critters.

Any suggestions for a guy who knows essentially nothing about digital cams?

i recently bought a fuji s5000, which is really nice, you should be able to get it for under $300. it's like an slr camera with a 10x optical zoom, and you can fit additional lenses and filters to it.
