dont take this the wrong way, but its because they can tell you dont play and they want to take advantage of this.

i know too many people that make their living off of moms trying to surprise their kids, especially around christmas times.

they make more money because mom doesnt know the first thing about instruments, pricing etc. (not saying thats whats happening here) but i do have friends who work in big music stores here and thats from experience. worst than vultures.

Yamaha makes the student models, plus they offer some good semi-pro stuff, too, from what I can remember.

Unison makes pretty good pro stuff at not a completly ridiculous price. A soprano sax made by them could run you 1200 to 2000 bucks.

Maybe you could put in saxophone in the search and click on buy it now....print out the top three pages ($500 and above) and let him or the music teacher to pick out a good one :-)
