The key to our country will always be our liberties and how they are treated in our media, courts and law enforcement. Liberals say "civil rights" and Conservatives call them "personal freedoms", but it's essentially the same thing, the amount of sovereignty the government allows its people. When citizens are unwilling to stand up and fight against our government's infringements on our freedoms then we will slide into the dustbin of history and fail as a political experiment in self-rule. Thoughtful, passionate discourse and dissent are the lifeblood of democracy. It's not the war in Iraq that scares me, it's the way congress green-lighted it without any debate or probing into the supposed reasons. Same thing with the Patriot Act and now law enforcement can essentially ignore your 4th Amendment rights if they deem you a "terrorist".
