You save sometimes ( not always) with IU casing, but they have a tendency to overheat ... 2U are much better and easier to upgrade...

Ive never had that problem... why do you figgure a 2U would be cooler then a 1U? more room? Its all about airflow and a controlled environment datacenter ;P

Yes, you choose a barebones sever which means you get server grade motherboard and Case designed for the motherboard. Air flow will be good since Supermicro spends lot's on R&D. I think they even OEM for dell.

Then add CPU, ram and harddrives of your choice.

Really depends on how well the case is made. Always use server grade motherboard and case if you plan to use 1U. Heat should not been an issue. Depends on design.

We've had better success with our Dells than the Supermicros. Both of these 1u servers have never had any heat issues.
