An Arab-American waiter who reported for work at a presidential fundraiser last Friday was sent home because the US secret service believed he posed a security risk.
Mohamad Pharoan, a Syrian-born Muslim who entered the US in 1992 and became a citizen in 1996, was supposed to serve lunch at a banquet where George Bush raised $1m (£575,000) for his re-election campaign. He was escorted from the Hyatt Regency hotel in Baltimore, where he has worked for seven years, after just one question from a manager: "Is your name Mohamad?"

After initially denying involvement, the secret service admitted it was responsible for sending Mr Pharoan home. The decision was not taken because he was Arab or Muslim, it said. A spokesman said: "The problems stemmed from confusion over a work schedule."

Mr Pharoan said the rota had been distributed a week in advance and his name had been supplied to the authorities for background checks.

fletch, i dont see how racial profiling is bad.... any profiling that can catch criminals based on crime statistics is OK in my book... i dont care if they spot check single white men who were sexually abused as children and still live with their moms at age 45 to see if they are serial killers or child molesters... also, dont doubt for a minute that the cops *dont* profile the forementioned white men when a kid comes up missing or a serial killing/rape happens....

Just because racial profiling "works" does not make it right.

Lets say a police blockade is set up and the first 50 white males and the first 50 black males are searched for illegal materials (drugs, guns, etc.) 10 black males are found to possess illegal materials, while only 5 white males are (these numbers are of course figurative). Does that mean that my black college English professor who has never broken a law in his life deserves the inconvenience of being pulled over and searched the next time a police officer sees him? Of course not, and he shouldn't be. And it's sad that there are even black police officers out there who defend this practice...I think it speaks to the fact that there is a subconscious racist sentiment underlying in this country (no matter how aware or unaware of it individuals are) that even affects those being discriminated against.
