    MiniDV or DVCAM?

    I'm about to buy a VX2100 but the PD170 has caught my attention for $800 more. I'm wondering what are the advantages of the DVCAM format vs. MiniDV? It appears that is the only difference between these two cameras, besides the XLR connections.

    Anyone know what makes DVCAM so special?

          I have the PD170.

          The PD170 takes both tapes.

          the difference is not quality, but reliability. The tape runs twice as fast, and so you have much less chance of getting piclation. But the tapes only last 40 mins. DV cam tapes also cost a lot more and not easy to get.

          Do not get the PD170 for the DV cam side, but get it for the picture quality, sound and many other features.

          DV Cam tapes are used mainly for studio work. But the pic quality is the same. Its just more durable.

              Also the PD170 is not consumer Sony, its Pro Sony (the pro side of Sony) and as such the camera is better built, is pro sound, pro picture.

              Its also simple to use (once you set it up).

              You will be very please with the 170.

              Its a bit like choosing a Ford or a Jaguar car. Both with do the job, but the Jag will last you for much longer, and will make you feel great.

                      So if the picture quality is the same, then why the part about saying "get it for the picture quality"?

                          Both are variations of a good format. You need to look at who your customers are. If you are just doing tapes for yourself, then it isn't important. If you clients prefer one or the other, go that way. Many media outlets (if you intend more commercial oriented stuff) don't like to handle mini-dv, they prefer a bigger format (many are on digital betacam, imagine!).

                          Also, considering the upcoming switch to High-def, camera purchases at this point are not a great investment, IMHO.
