Why do you get sad when famous people die?

Why do millions get all upset when celebs die ? Did you even know the guy ? Seriously... just a random though

carry on

I usually celebrate when celebrities die.

I'm hoping that the Pope and Ronald Reagan die soon.

I'll get a little sad when someone I don't know whose work spoke to me dies, but not just someone whose name I know or whose picture I've seen.

With actors and the such people feel like they know them because they get so involved in the roles they play. I am sure youve heard the stories of actors that play villans getting slapped on the street or cursed at by strangers. A large majority of people forget they arent the people they portray in the movies.

Also some people just miss the actual talent of the celebrity. For example Chris Farley and John Candy made me laugh like crazy. I really liked the movies they were in a lot. When they died it sucked knowing I would never enjoy there talent any more.

And still others have a nostalgic attachment to certain celebs. One may have grown up listening to Frank Sinatra. It brings back fond memories of there child hood. With him gone a part of them vanishes. When John Ritter died I recalled watching Threes Company as a kid. It was sad to see a part of history die.

The person is not creating any more and, if there was sense that they had a certain insight which was meaningful to me on a personal level, I think that contributes to a sense of loss.

Like if William Gibson or Jay McInerney died, I'd be bummed out. I suppose if a news reporter asked me for a quote on what their books meant to me, I would give one, but I'm not a crying-in-public kinda girl, so I would definitely not be a crying-on-television kinda girl.

depends what they were famous for. If it means no more laughs, no more music etc then of course it's sad. If they're just famous for being famous then who gives a fuck.

That's a damn good question Chris. I have been trying to figure it out for years. I was especially baffled by all the tears flowing for Princess Diana here in America. That made no sense.

EXACTLY ! very good example

How many of you knew her ? Sure she did some great things over there helped chidlren and did anything she coudl took like like a princess in front of a camera .. but how many storys where there about all her dark sides and yet you still call her a loved princess. I remember when she did i was living in canada with a lady taht was close to my family just to get a new country experence and this lady was in tears for days because of the death of her and I never understood it.

I don't... But I would raise a toast in celebration when the Pope dies. Personally I still think he should be tried as a criminal for his policy of no condom use in third world countries... Wonder how many lives he has taken/destroyed...?

I think the whole mourning thing is sort of a way for people to feel bigger than they really are. Sort of like rabid sport fans.

I was in south America at the time of her death. When I woke up a relative was crying...I asked what happened..she responded Diana died!! My first reaction was sadness, than I realized...
I have no relatives name Diana! I asked her who she was and she said princess Diana!! I was shocked! When I went shopping that day everyone was mourning for her!! No offense, I was young, but I wasn't able to understand why these south Americans where mourning her!
I suppose it's what she represented?

Well if you are talking about musicians, it really sucks to think of what they might have written had they lived longer, such as jeff buckley, jimi hendrix, fuck i could go on and on ... of course some of these people gave all they had and ... as the man said, its better to burn out than to fade away (but im sure as shit glad that neil is still around)

Actors, Redd Foxx really hurt to see him go, just because of the years of laughter he gave to me ... nothing better than laughter

plus what charly said ... as the people you grew up idolizing start to drop off, you realize, "hey, this sucks - im gonna die too"
