Can anyone help with this server? problem...

Ok, so we registered a domain name about a month ago and threw up an index page, and a few directories. The problem is, some people can only hit http://www.thedomain.com and others can only hit http://thedomain.com.

What in the hell can I do to fix this and what causes it?

Well, it could depend on two things:

1) DNS

Make sure you that your zone file has all the entires.

2) Apache

Make sure the VirtualHost directive has the servername and aliases specified. You can also do a wildcarded server aliases like:

ServerAlias *.yourdomain.com

Well, I have no clue what you said but I'll pass it on to my partner who speaks more computer geek than me. Thanks man.

When you do your dns, you list:

www.mydomain.com hahahahahahahaha> 111.111.111.2 ( your IP address)
mydomain.com hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha> 111.111.111.2

if you need more " subdomains " such as news.mydomain.com, you do the same.

Your host should take care of that. If you run your own NS on your box, should be real easy.

Otherwise, use zoneedit.com for your DNS, even as 3rd and 4th just as a safety.
