I feel your pain. My old house had a leaky basement, but it would only leak when the water level would get above a certain point. Usually once a year for the 3 years I was living there.

I eventually had to pay some Basement Boss guys to dig a tile and put a sump pump inside the basement. That actually made more mess than the flooding. Fucking cement dust over all my stuff.

Our house was a chalet before the addition with a root cellar that would flood every year.

We had the back hoe guy dig a deep trench behind the place to solve the flooding .:)

It sounds like you need a good french drain system. Since you are handy with the mitre saw, you could probably even install it yourself. French drains rule, it solved a huge problem I had with my last house. Basically exactly as you described...3 stories built into a hillside, main level/front door on the front side that the whole yard slopes towards, basement and garage in back. Water came in the front door and also into the garage at the back. We had french drains installed in one day that totally stopped it all.
Look into it, you won't be disappointed.

French drains are the modern equivalent of moats.

Yeah but it's not as cool to put gators in a french drain.

That isn't as bad as my flood!

I went on on a 7 day cruise over the summer. On the way back, I get a phone call from my neighbors saying that my house flooded 3 days ago. Well to make a long story short, my neighbors were very kind and pumped most of the water out while I was on vacation. The water came from a faulty part on the back of the upstairs toliet. So the 1st floor and basement were completly destroyed. :( Well, I know have a completly new house thanks to insurance :thumbsup . Lost alot of stuff though, such as my computers, tvs, furniture.

This is a french drain (Url Below), we piped the water away with the corrugated/sleeved pipe (url below). We rented a ditch witch, bought crazy amounts of drain rocks, and laid about 200' of pipe 24" underground. The water then drained happily into the forest and away from our home. It was a bit more complicated than that, but easily done in a weekend with 3 people.
