recently spent about 7 weeks in vancouver.. lived on burrard st downtown... was a bit of a shock coming from australia and being hassled by bumms and drug dealers whenever i walked down the street... but never really had any trouble, except for my mates getting screwed over by dodgy dealers.

Used to be out just about everynight around granville, gastown, commercial drive, sure there would lots suspect people around, but luckily for us we just minded our own business.

canada is a great, hopefully get back there soon.

Back when we were a white nation, violent crimes were indeed very rare. Thank god for rural areas.

i lived in east van for 3 years and never heard of anybody having any sort of violent crime experience.

the way i felt about vancouver is you can walk down the street with a million dollars in your pocket and you'll be safe, but any property you want to keep you need to chain it up and bolt it down.

I lived in Vancouver, Burnaby and New West throughout the 6 years I stayed out there.

I also ran one of the worst bars in Surrey and never had any problems.

I think the only time I got hassled was by some drunk ass at about 9am in the morning on my way to work, but it turned out fine. The government needs to be aware that opening the liquor stores and beer and wine stores at 9am is definitely not necessary.:2 cents:

I have lived in 4 Provinces and 1 Territory.. in 4 of the largest cities in Canada.. Vancouver is very safe..it has a large social problem indeed..but in every major center across Canada I see the homeless, drug dealers and drunken crackies. Vancouver itself is a very small city and it gets more attention than the rest of Canada for it's junkies and famous corner.

More sad than unsafe IMO.

we get that attention because we have (and you live in) the highest hiv per captia sqare block area in north america. it might not be now, but it was when i worked at hempbc between 1998-2000 and it's only gotten worse. being the warmest big city in canada, scum gravitates here. i've only otherwise lived in scarbarough and la, and yes if i had to choose to be dropped into the worst part of any of the three, it would be vancouver. but this city has gotten alot worse in the past couple years. still my favourite place in the world though.

Conde Nast Traveller in this coming issue rated Vancouver as the #2 destination to visit in all of the Americas (Victoria, BC was rated #1). That is the largest travel mag out there and they used a bunch of criteria to evaluate the choices and Vancouver beat Cancun, Las Vegas, NYC...

Its not fair to look at specific incidents and draw sweeping conclusions. We do have a huge drug and homeless problem that causes us to have the highest property crime rate in North America per capita (I believe Miami, FL. was #2 and was way behind), but with regard to murders, muggings, shootings...Vancouver is a very safe place. Take away the crazed druggies and it would even more so.

Hehe I never had any trouble in Vancouver, other than the trouble Makingcoin and I start at the Roxy. :winkwink:

It also might have something to do with the fact that I am 6"0 200+ pounds. People usually don't look at guys like me first to rob, they go for an easier target.

Vancouver is a nice city, but I've never been to any city with more homeless people begging at every corner and approaching you constantly. Victoria is bad too.

Vancouver is the homeless bum capital of the western world. Soon tourists won't even want to go there. They'll step off those cruise ships in the harbour and be mobbed by hoards of bums asking for money.
