How reliable are these?

I don't think the Visa fee is what makes them reiliable, you hear bad things about ones with the fee.

BUT, the ones without the fees are definitely ones that are up to something. If you don't pay the fee, you aren't registered with Visa thus it's a risk, period.

obviously the biggest risk is the processor taking off or shutting down. Any other possible problems?

How are they able to evade the VISA fee anyway?

I'd say that most of them are evading the Visa fee by one of the following ways:

1) They have an offshore merchant account and either their bank doesn't care (yet) or the bank is unware of what they are doing. Either way, Visa will get them eventually.

See, if you don't pay Visa the reg fee, you aren't registering your URL and they can't keep track of your chargeback ratios.

2) They have a regular adult merchant account in the states and aren't telling Visa. That of course is an even higher risk, but both are really.

3) Other suggestions?

I guess Visa isn't using a uniform international standard. Or else this would not be an issue.

Are e-checks are viable option? Supposedly the turnaround time for these are horrible.
