Appraise this script

Okay. Ben wrote a Gallery script that does the following:

Takes images in a folder. Resizes them and places them in a template that you designate.
Adds pics to a database and links them correctly in the folders. Thumbs and fullsize.
Option to link images to HTML or straight image.
Add your affiliate code and name it for quick use later.

Adds all images in a nice little template, links them how you want, uploads and gives you the name of the file. Also gives you 3 placeholders for reciprocal link HTML on the top of the file.

Does a lot more that is wicked cool, and can do more on request.

How much is something like this worth? $10? $20?

nothing, since it is lacking the most important thing that all the people making scripts like this or gallery type makers.

ALLOW US TO FUCKING CROP THE DAMN THUMBNAILS!

No tgp is going to list all assed out resized thumbs, they need to be great quality nicely croped on good areas not just a resize of the big pic.

After it builds the gallery, it should then allow you to make the thumbnails.

Then it can upload/do all that other crap.

It should also keep track of your content so it knows what pics have been used already.

It has a square you can drag around the image and choose where you want to crop it.

Soul_Rebel was the closest. And I would have said dont take less than $100 if it does the cropping bit as well.

Never ask cheap webmasters what to charge for a script that they know they can use.

Update:

His script now makes thumbnailing and gallery creating easy as hell.
The script comes with 10 prebuild gallery templates. All you do is take the images you want to use and crop them using the tool and number them in the spots you want them to appear. Enter your FTP info and it sends the thumbs and regular images into a directory. Then it gives you the URL to link to.

It comes with spots to include an image url and href for recip links. (3 spots on top of gallery, though if you make custom templates you can put them anywhere with the special code)

Here's how the thumbnailing works. You can take an image and aspect ratio crop. So you take the selection you want - in ratio. Example you want the thumb to be 88x88. You click the 88x88 thumber, you drag it accross the area and it maintains the same aspect ratio. When you click the resize, it resizes the area you selected to the 88x88.

Thus you do not have to play around with guessing where and how much of the image you can get!!!

This software will be selling for $150.00 and will be available soon for public release.

Just so you guys know, Ben is my roommate. I post this stuff for him because he has like 25 posts... and is afraid he wont get real responses then. He's no noob.

Are there ANY features you guys want to see in this? Anything that would make gallery building easier? This thing is already going to reduce the workload by like 500%. But if you can think of an annoying part of gallery making you want automated or made easy POST IT HERE!

Sounds exactly like "gallerydevil" that I used to sell. Gallery makers are generally pretty tight so $150 will scare away 99% of your potential customers. Everyone wants free/<$30 now. My script was $99 and did most of the things you described there and came with a rotating script. Sales were dismal to say the least so I dropped it.

I did get a lot of offers like "Hey man, I will add a link to adultdevil.com on my submit page if you hook me up with your script".

No worries no worries.
Good feedback - good to know these things. I mean what the hell is the point in releasing a product if no one will buy it.

I'd be willing to buy a script like this if it also included automatic color correction of the images when resizing/compressing them.

Unfortunately things don't quite work like that. The cost of a script depends heavily on the support offered. If a script is $40 and 50 people buy it he'll have to support those 50 users. At only $40, it's hardly worth it. If a script is only $40 and the support time is limited it might be possible.

I have found that if you refuse to support something after a given amount of time, customers will feel cheated. It's better to charge more up front and support it forever. That'll keep the customers coming back and the revenue flowing.

It's better to provide a quality script at a quality script price instead of trying to be the Wal-Mart of the script world. Generally speaking, people that aren't willing to pay a fair price for a script don't have money and thus aren't particularly good customers. If someone sees and recognizes quality and is willing to pay for it, that person is the ideal customer.

Yep, exactly... this isn't something to just take lightly... scripting has one huge draw back.... SUPPORT.

Now, you make a script, and want it to do well, so you make the price nice and low... and it's a great script, so put those two things together and people buy it up. Now you're sitting on icq, trying to get work done and you've get a dozen or two people hitting you up with dumb ass questions or suggestions or what not at any given time.... all day long!

With such a low price for your script, you won't even be able to out source the customer service because the amount you'd have to split or pay that CS person would take a huge cut out of your profits.

If you put the price too high though, you won't get anyone buying so there's no worry about customer support.

You have to find the medium there and price it accordingly.

Oh, and you guys are harsh... even the best scripter can't whip together this type of project in an hour.... and the prices you're talking, that'd be about an hour's pay.

I'm all for competition and getting stuff done cheap, but come on... programmers need to eat too. Be fair... give them what they're worth at least. They're making tools to make your time worth more money... the least you could do is give them back what they're worth.

If you want to sell it for $150...

How about adding a pulldown to switch niches... each niche goes to its own image db, and you can save/edit/delete the ads/textlinks...

Even with a bit extra work, a user can upload and store different headers/footers for easy access, and everything is stored in it's niche db...

Just some thought on what I think would be useful in a script of this sort, and the extra features would put your script in the price range your interested in...
