While the article title is "spam law goes into effect," it also notes that president bush hasn't signed the legislation yet, which means that the spam law has not yet gone into effect. The article's author probably doesn't understand US law-making. At any rate, Bush is sure to sign it when he gets a chance. I'd bet on an immediate court challenge and injunction, as happened with the national do not call registry, but you never know. In the end I think it won't make any difference, foreign countries will make up for whatever US spam reduction occurs.

Britain followed suit by passing a law that fines spammers upwards of $8,057 (U.S) if convicted on charges of spamming via email or text messaging. That law would only cover home users and goes into effect on Dec. 11, 2003. And Italy recently stepped up to the plate and drafted a law that would fine spammers up to $100,000 (U.S.), and in some cases would carry a three-year prison term.

Why the hell are people freaking out over email spam after 6 years of it, when snail mail spam has been rampid for 50 years and kills trees in the process. email spam only kills bandwidth? Oh wait, its gotta be because the government gets a cut of snail mail spam.

The postal service is private sector ! All the government does is mandate how much the stamps can be.
