Democracy is not fair.. FUck Voting!!
Ok, I took a hard swipe in this threads title but consider this simple example of how even the best voting system can leave many people fucked.
Example: Mom and Dad have 2 sons and one daughter. They do thing democratically so every monday night they vote to determine which TV show to watch. Mom and daughter vote for figure skating. Dad and two sons vote for football. The vote is 3 to 2 in favor of football. They vote every monday the same way and after 5 football seasons the daughter complains that she never got to watch skating...not even once. She is told to shut the fuck up because the decision was fair because everybody voted. This is when mom and daughter realized something very important about democracy. They learned that voters will choose sides based on sex/race/religion..etc and the side with just one single stinking vote more than the minority will get it's way every time and every time the majority voted to fuck the minority. Mom, being the intelligent wowman that she is held a pussy boycot which pissed dad off enough to become a dictator and he switch the TV to figure skating and told the 2 sons to shut the fuck up. But dad didn't have to be boycotted he only needed to realize that the vote was never going to change and he could have talked the two sons into being compassionate enough to say "fuck the vote... let the ladies watch the skating". The moral of the story is that democracy is a useful system but nevertheless it is just another system. There is no perfect system of any kind. So American's should stop shoving this imperfect shit down other countries throats because they already have an imperfect system in place. Now for real shit: 1776 America became a voting democray and under this system it took another 87 years and a civil war before a single man named Lincoln acted like a dictator and ended slavery. But some people believe Iraq will be fixed in a few weeks after they start voting...never mind the fact that Iraqis voted for Sadam in their last election before the US decided to kill his elected ass and have an election. The US "sponsored" vote in Iraq will see the Sunnis and the Shiitte voting against the Kurds and the same shit going on before the vote will continue after the vote. Only this time they get to go through the farce of casting ballots to jusify their oppressive bullshit upon the minority population. Bottom line: Despite the fact that democracy is useful democracy is not a pancea. It is not the "cure all". (intentional redundancy) So please can the "pie-in-the-sky" preaching of democracy because any American ****** already knows what it is. Choose common sense over common ignorance because the history of America proves that common ignorance often wins at the polls. |

First of all, thanks for the brainfood post. It's refreshing to see stimulating posts once in a while to take a break from the standard GFY fare of 1) "I am God" ego worship posts or 2) inflammatory subject lines about throwing "fags" out of castle towers to get sig views or 3) complete non sequiturs. You raise some interesting points but one issue that comes quickly to mind is that the US did NOT become a democracy in 1776 or even in 1789 when enough states ratified the Constitution. Prior to the election of Andrew Jackson, only "propertied" males can vote in elections. Hence, working men (and forget about the women -- they only achieved the right to vote in the 20th century) were disenfranchised. Democracy was not born perfect. Nor was it ever NOT hypocritical. It is a continuously evolving process. Indeed, if you asked John Jay or John Adams that, in the future, people of color and women will have the right to vote they will probably laugh at you. Another point is that democracy is not perfect since majorities are required to create democracies. This means a minority's voice did not win out. This is the simple logic of representational democracy--all democracy means is that the majority's will is what rules the day. What if the majority is wrong? What if the majority subscribes to policies that hurt and devalue individuals? This happens all the time. Supreme court cases like Dred Scott, Korematsu, Buck v Bell, etc. all point to the dread reality that there is such a thing as a DICTATORSHIP OF THE MAJORITY. Americans are lucky to have a balancing principle in their democracy called the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights is NOT a democratic institution. Indeed, it protects the INDIVIDUAL minority from actions imposed by the majority (through its control of the government). Democracy works to crush minorities in many countries. Ethnic minorities may control the economy but they are at the mercy of the political majority. The Sukarno era anti-Chinese riots in Indonesia come quickly to mind as an example of this dynamic. Democracy may not be a panacea but there really are no other viable alternatives. |

Example: US democracy calls for elections where the majority vote takes office. So in the recent presidential election Bush wins with 50,000,001 to 50,000,000(fake numbers). Is this really good that half the voters are not satisfied with their leader. Sounds more like a recipe for a revolt. The "evil impire" was not even this dumb. They had a confidence vote where if "too many" negative votes were counted the choosen individual did not take office. "Too many" did not mean a majority; it was subjective depending on the situation. It makes very little sense to have a president that is hated by half the people. There may be few or no alternatives to voting but there are many alternatives to what we in the US CLAIM to be democracy. I cannot prove democracy does not work because I have yet to see a true democracy in America. All I see is the same robot-like caucasion being elected as the leader time after time. And I stress the "robot-like" because it's not just that the pres is always White; but why is he always SOOOOOO White. Bill clinton was refreshing because at least he got some pussy.... robots don't get pussy. |

I really like the posts of both of you. Really refreshing to see people take a different view on things without shouting conspiracy or other extreme view.
In light of your posts I would like to add the following: The US even has a leader now that was elected by a minority due to a system that can't really be fair if the minority decides the outcome of an election. A system where the most important questions are decided by a president appointed supreme court must be unfair. Judges retireing early so a president can set a new one of the same party or staying longer for the reason of a possible party change in the white house. which leads me to the 2 party system. No chance for diversity here. In addition it costs so much to get elected nowadays that the politician can never decide anything without taking at least a dozen opinions of rich people into account. A system when it costs 20 million to get elected to a 200000 dollar a year job for five years can't really bring you the good politicians that rule for the majority. I could go on and on and the point of a democracy not being perfect can be proven over and over but besides this the sytem at least works more or less stable.

WOW!
now this thread sure was a diamond in the rough. i figured it was going to be some ranting gfy lunatic. but no. it was an intellectually intriguing and mind stimulating conversation that was amazingly insightful for being posted on GFY! here are my thoughts.... democracy isnt fair. never has, never will be. there are all kinds of crooked and nasty things going on all over america and no one seems to care. our president wasnt democratically elected. clinton was a good guy cause he got some pussy. in all reality folks. would you rather have your leader(yes the most powerful man in the world) get a little poontang on the side(yes you would too if you were the most powerful man in the world) or would you rather see him go to foreign countries that really pose no real threat to you whatsoever and blow amounts of money that are so big most people never took the time to learn them because we would never have to fucking use them. to his past employers and compaign contributors. i for one would rather have the former as my great leader but thats just me. if he wants to let a few of his brothers friends off death row or whatever. great. lets hope the found god while they were so close to death and will opt not to kill again. if he wants to get a little nooky from his secretary, more power to him. america needs to focus on our problems that are within before we go and attempt to fix other peoples problems for them. but then again the truth always has seemed to be most peoples own worst enemy. crooked politicians, currupt cops, lack of proper education, dropping standard of living, messed up economy, an increaseing unemployment rate, etc etc. these people think apple pie and baseball make american's happy like it used to when the world looked like it was collapsing around them. but those days are gone now. americans arent happy and we arent entertained by their bullshit. i liked the mention of how a 50/50 split down the lie is a recipe for disaster, iIv thought the same thing a number of times and wondered if its a hint at leading whats to become. as history goes. we been around for 200 years now. which is a pretty good run at survival for a country or government, most didnt even last this long. |
