The SmartScreen technology will be used in several products. The technology will use algorithms to judge whether incoming e-mail messages qualify as junk e-mail and filter them out before they get to the end user's e-mailbox.

Outlook 2003 does a very good job as it is.

Some people are of the opinion that right technology is the only way to kill spam. According to this view, spam will eventually become a minor technical irritation like viruses. I don't agree. There's been quite a few companies trying to kill the spam dragon (ex. Spamcop, Spam Assassin, Brightmail, etc etc). Each employ differing methodologies. Unfortunately, with the virus like ability of spammers to identify and exploit online communication channels, no technology can truly create a spam free environment.
